As we close another year, it is both necessary and urgent to reflect on the welfare of single parents and their children. No society can claim to be safe, peaceful, or free from crime if single parents and their children are denied protection, opportunity, and a supportive space to thrive.
Field research conducted by SPEN Liberia in one of the oldest commercial and border districts in Lofa County reveals alarming realities. Findings show that 45% of women and girls become single parents due to cross-border trade and relationships with immigrants. 25% result from accidental deaths involving commercial motorbikes and vehicles. 15% are linked to r**e and child birth, 10% to natural death and illness, while 5% stem from divorce and separation.
These figures are not just statistics—they broken protection syst and families pushed into poverty. Without urgent intervention, communities will continue to face school dropouts, early marriage, sexual violence, drug abuse, and rising crime.
