Street Child CEO praises Liberian government’s ‘huge political will’ to get more children into education

Monrovia, Liberia – 15 October 2024 – The CEO of the global Street Child charity praised the Liberian government for its “huge political will” to bring more children into education.

Street Child is a global children’s charity that works in over 25 countries around the world – dedicated to tackling the barriers that prevent children from learning in safe environments.

Tom Dannatt, the organisation’s founder and CEO visited Liberia this week as part of the “Street Child Project” under the theme “Support A Child, Save The Future”.
Launched in August 2024 and led by the Government of Liberia through the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, the multi-year initiative aims to enrol 50,000 street-connected children into school.
During this week’s visit to Liberia, Mr Dannatt held meetings with both Hon. Gbeme Horace-Kollie, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and Deputy Minister of Education, Hon. Nyekeh Forkpa – praising the “fantastic collaboration between different ministries” as part of the bold initiative to reduce the number of street-connected children in the country.

Tom Dannatt, CEO and founder of Street Child said:
“Over the last few months, it has been overwhelmingly evident that the Liberian government, led by His Excellency, Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., brings a huge amount of political will and deep belief to its long-term initiatives to get thousands of children off the streets and into classrooms. This is, by far, the best way to give these children the best chance in life.

“During meetings over the past week, we’ve witnessed the fantastic collaboration between different government ministries – particularly the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the Ministry of Education. Their strong commitment to action offers great hope for the future.”

The meetings in Liberia followed a high-level discussion hosted by Street Child at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) in New York City in September, which was addressed by both His Excellency, Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., President of Liberia, and Hon. Gbeme Horace-Kollie, the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection.

The event highlighted the importance of collaboration across sectors to advance universal primary education, ensuring that no child is left behind, no matter their circumstances.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
President of Liberia, Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., and Street Child celebrate groundbreaking initiative to enrol 50,000 street-connected children into education at UN General Assembly side eventNew York, September 26, 2024 – A groundbreaking initiative aimed at enrolling over 50,000 street-connected children into school in Liberia over the next six years was celebrated today at a high-level side event during the UN General Assembly in New York.
Originally announced last month, this project—led by the Government of Liberia in partnership with Street Child—marks a major step towards securing a brighter future for Liberia’s most vulnerable children.
Speaking at the event, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr., President of Liberia, highlighted the urgency of addressing the plight of street-connected children. “Children are not just statistics – they are young lives, often living in the shadows,” President Boakai remarked. “Every child deserves safety, security, and access to education. Through this initiative, we aim to provide that opportunity to thousands of Liberia’s most vulnerable children. This is not just about addressing immediate needs, but about laying the foundation
for long-term change."

This project comes as part of a wider effort to provide not only education but also holistic support for the children and their families. Street Child and the Liberian Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection have joined forces to offer livelihood support and grants to
caregivers. These initiatives aim to reduce the systemic challenges faced by street-connected
children, many of whom endure malnutrition, homelessness, and exploitation.

Tom Dannatt, CEO and Founder of Street Child, commended the political commitment
shown by the Liberian government, particularly the leadership of President Boakai. “Street
Child is proud to prioritise Liberia, especially as His Excellency mobilises on this issue and
galvanises his entire cabinet. It’s inspiring to work in an environment with such strong political will. Durable solutions require a joined-up approach—combining social, educational, and livelihood initiatives. With support from all corners of government, this is the ideal environment for us to operate. We have a proven model, an outstanding team, and government backing, but to bring this project to the scale it deserves, we urgently need funding. We call on all actors to get behind this initiative and help us create lasting change for Liberia's children."
At the event, the President’s call to action was supported by senior cabinet ministers,
including the Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, who emphasized that,"Our children are the future, and without decisive action, that future is at risk. By working with Street Child and other partners, we are laying the foundation for a brighter future for
every child in Liberia.” The project also benefits from the participation of other key ministries, including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, showcasing a united effort across Liberia’s government.

The Minister of Education noted the importance of integrating education efforts with broader social support systems. “This partnership represents a critical opportunity to align education efforts with broader social policies. When we work together—across ministries
and with partners like Street Child—we can ensure that every child in Liberia has the opportunity to thrive.”

The project reflects Liberia's multi-ministry approach to tackling the complex issues faced by
street-connected children. The Minister of Youth and Sports commented on the necessity of
cooperation across all government sectors to achieve lasting outcomes, stating, "To address these challenges comprehensively, it’s crucial that all ministries work together. Lasting outcomes for street-connected children will only come from a united effort.”

This event, held during the prestigious UN General Assembly, not only shone a spotlight on Liberia’s street-connected children but also on the global crisis of vulnerable children lacking access to education and essential services. Liberia’s bold steps—supported by Street Child—aim to make a meaningful impact on the lives of thousands of children. As President Boakai stressed, "Today, I call on all of you to join us in this mission to restore dignity, protection, and hope for every child, both in Liberia and across the world.”

In conclusion, Tom Dannatt reinforced the urgency of scaling up support: “We have the political will, the expertise, and the models that work—but we need more resources to bring this project to its full potential. Our partnership with the Government of Liberia is a
powerful starting point, but we need the support of international actors, donors, and the private sector to ensure every child has the chance to thrive.”

This initiative is a critical component of Liberia’s broader strategy to transform the lives of vulnerable children, breaking the cycle of poverty and exclusion by providing education, social support, and economic opportunities for both children and their caregivers.
As the event concluded, the shared message was clear: with collaboration, determination,
and adequate resources, a future where every child in Liberia has access to education and opportunity is within reach.

Today, Street Child of Liberia and the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, proudly signed a 6-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This groundbreaking partnership will empower us to support the Ministry in recruiting and enrolling 50,000 street-connected and out-of-school children (OOSC) across Liberia over the next six years.

Through this MOU, we will not only ensure these children receive quality education but also provide livelihood support to their parents and caregivers through small business grants. This initiative is a monumental step towards breaking the cycle of poverty and giving these children a brighter future.

A huge thanks to Minister Horce and her incredible team for making this happen. We are beyond proud of the team at Street Child of Liberia for their dedication and hard work as we start this journey with our sights set on getting the first 500 children into classrooms starting next month.
