HOW WE WORK
GOLD uses journalism, lobby, advocacy, peaceful dialogue, national debate and protest as working tools to promoting good governance and reduce poverty in various constituencies. In addition, GOLD uses agricultural project to increase local food security. JOURNALISM
Growing Liberia Democracy (GOLD) uses journalism to document stories that highlight the effects of social inequity and corruption. The stories focus on issues as diverse as weak security, youth vulnerability, lack of safe drinking water, un-fair elections, concession agreements, poor labor practice, lack of health support, poor education, agriculture with low yield, weak infrastructures, lack of electricity, r**e, domestic violence, ritual killing, child mortality and crime. These stories enable us have more detailed information and evidence on the problem we want to change and for this information to reach a broader audience. Our stories are published in news papers, through radio, at websites, facebook, twitter, instagram, LindIn and other social networks. ADVOCACY AND LOBBYING
GOLD uses advocacy and lobbying to engage representatives on issues of social inequity and corruption and to subsequently influence policy and decisions making process. Through advocacy and lobbying GOLD engages the legislature to change policies, laws, regulations and distribution of resources in order to improve people’s lives in an efficient way. The aim of GOLD’s advocacy efforts is to organize and increase the power of Liberian citizens voices who typically have a hard time finding their concerns addressed politically. AGRICULTURE
GOLD foresee animal farming to be an area of potential for direct eradication of extreme poverty in Liberia. Thus GOLD also intends to increase animal farming for job opportunity and food security for the major population of people living in rural communities and to the larger population across Liberia. PEACEFUL DIALOG AND PROTEST
Our intention is to lobby and advocate with the legislature, to see them having social or political progress without violence but through dialogue and collaboration. We can however be involved with protest if reformism fails across every spectrum of dialogue and collaboration. ACTIVITY PLAN
GOLD is directly engaged in the following activities on the ground:
• Calling public hearings between constituencies and its representatives
• Civic education
• Raising citizens’ awareness about national policy
• Animal farming
• Collaborating with international communities, civic groups, and politicians on issues related to its mission
• Actions on the ground to influence policy and enhance accountability in rural areas
• Respond to constituencies that call our attention for change on a particular problem they have recognized in their constituent. JUSTIFICATION
Corruption and social inequity are important factors in understanding the circumstances of individuals living in extreme poverty in Liberia. According to the European Commission, It is estimated that 76% of the population live below the poverty line of US$1 a day and 52% even live in extreme poverty of under US$0.50 a day. The damaging consequences of corruption and social inequity are felt in both urban and rural contexts. In rural context – where the majority of the primary resources are located – the effects of corruption are particularly pronounced. An important tool in addressing this corruption is evidence gathering and reporting. GOLD investigates and reports on issues of rural corruption in the primary resource sector. This evidence is important in engaging both government and civil society organizations towards finding solutions to shared problems – in this instance corruption - that prevent equitable economic growth.
