Happy Mother’s Day to all of our wonderful mothers!

Before we learned to read, she was our first book. Before we knew the world, she was our first teacher.

A mother's love is Africa's oldest and greatest education. We honor the women who guide, protect, teach and uplift us with endless care and resilience.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AASU EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF WEST AFRICA CONDEMNS
POLICE BRUTALITY AGAINST UNIVERSITY OF LIBERIA STUDENTS,
DEMANDS IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF ARRESTED STUDENTS

MONROVIA, LIBERIA — April 14, 2026 — The Office of the Executive Committee Member for West Africa of the All-Africa Students Union (AASU) unequivocally and strongly condemns the brutal and unwarranted use of force by the Liberian National Police against peaceful students of the University of Liberia, particularly members of the Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) and every student who were lawfully exercising their democratic rights.

The Office further demands the
immediate and unconditional release of all students who were unlawfully arrested while exercising their constitutional rights.

This act of repression is unacceptable and represents a grave assault on the fundamental freedoms guaranteed to every Liberian citizen. The images and reports emerging from these incidents are deeply disturbing and strike at the very core of Liberia’s democratic values. Let it be made abundantly clear: students are not criminals. They are the conscience of society, the drivers of change, and the defenders of justice. Any attempt to silence them through intimidation, violence, or unlawful detention is a direct attack on democracy itself. The actions of the police demonstrate a dangerous disregard for human rights and the rule of law, and such conduct must not be tolerated under any circumstances.

The 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia explicitly guarantees the right to peaceful assembly and expression. Article 17 clearly states: “All persons, at all times, in an orderly and peaceable manner, shall have the right to assemble and consult upon the common good…” This provision is not a privilege granted at the discretion of the state — it is an inalienable right. The actions of the Liberia National Police are therefore unconstitutional, unlawful, and a betrayal of the oath to protect and serve the people. Furthermore, Article 11 of the Constitution affirms that “all persons are born equally free and independent and have certain natural, inherent and inalienable rights.”

Among these rights are liberty, security of the person, and protection under the law. The violent crackdown on peaceful students is a direct violation of these protections and undermines the credibility of Liberia as a democratic state governed by the rule of law. We therefore demand the immediate and unconditional release of all students who were unlawfully arrested while exercising their constitutional rights. Their continued detention is not only unjust but constitutes an ongoing violation of their fundamental freedoms.

The Inspector General of Police must act without delay to rectify this injustice and restore public confidence in the institution. In addition, we call on the Government of Liberia to launch an independent, transparent, and impartial investigation into the acts of brutality perpetrated against the students. Those responsible — regardless of rank or position — must be held fully accountable. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, as impunity will only embolden further violations. We also urge the international community, including human rights organizations, diplomatic missions, and regional bodies, to take a keen interest in this matter.

Silence in the face of injustice is complicity. The protection of democratic rights and freedoms in Liberia is not solely a domestic concern but a regional and global responsibility. The student movement has historically remained the epicentre of social consciousness and progressive change. Any attempt to suppress it will be met with firm resistance. We stand in solidarity with the students of Liberia and reaffirm our commitment to defending their rights, dignity, and future. The struggle for justice, accountability, and freedom will not be silenced.

Long Live The Revolutionary Spirit Of The Students’ Movement!!
Aluta—the struggle continues

Earlier today, I had the honor of paying an acquaintance visit to veteran student leader Mr. James M. Fromayan, who currently serves as Chairman of the Liberia National Commission on Small Arms.

Our meeting was both insightful and inspiring. As a distinguished figure in the history of the Liberian student movement, Mr. Fromayan shared valuable reflections on the historic role students have played in shaping national discourse through advocacy, civic engagement, and principled leadership.

During the discussion, he highlighted the enduring legacy of student activism and emphasized that the student movement remains the epicenter of consciousness—a space where ideas are nurtured, critical debates are encouraged, and future leaders are shaped.

Such engagements are important reminders of the responsibility we carry as young leaders to uphold the values of advocacy, peace, and progressive transformation across our societies.

I remain grateful for the opportunity to learn from those who paved the way and continue to contribute to national development.

May the message of sacrifice, love, and resurrection inspire us to remain steadfast, uplift one another, and continue working towards a more united and progressive Africa.

Wishing you a peaceful and meaningful Easter celebration.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

AASU Executive Committee of W/Africa Demands Urgent Mediation in Guinea-Liberia Border Crisis to Protect 8 Million Students across Mano River Basin

MONROVIA, LIBERIA — March 27, 2026 — The All-Africa Students Union (AASU) is calling for immediate, high-level diplomatic intervention following three weeks of rising military tensions along the Guinea-Liberia border.

While a recent summit in Conakry between the Presidents of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone established a framework for peace, AASU notes a dangerous "implementation gap." Despite diplomatic assurances, reports of continued troop presence and civilian displacement persist, threatening the stability of the Mano River region.

"The time for mere observation is over," says Cde. Oumu T. Sall, AASU Executive Committee Member for West Africa. "We need active mediation and confidence-building mechanisms. The futures of over 8 million students across these three nations are currently hanging in the balance."

Reflecting on formation and legacy of war, we consider this as a "Silent Crisis" Creeping and Facing West African Youth.

The AASU highlights that the instability does not just threaten national borders; it threatens a generation of intellectual capital. The student populations at risk include:

• Guinea: 4–5 million students
• Sierra Leone: 3–4 million students
• Liberia: 1.3–1.8 million students

Immediate Risks to Education is imminent,

If the situation is not de-escalated through the Mano River Union (MRU), ECOWAS, and the African Union (AU), the West African hub of AASU warns of the following consequences:

1. Academic Collapse: Imminent school closures in border communities and the disruption of critical national and regional examinations.
2. Permanent Dropouts: Displacement leads to fractured educational paths; many students forced to flee never return to formal schooling.
3. Youth Vulnerability: Instability increases the risk of child labor, early marriage, and the recruitment of young people into armed groups.
4. Economic Barriers: Conflict-driven poverty will make tuition and basic educational resources inaccessible for the region's most vulnerable households.

We urge the governments of Guinea and Liberia to move beyond rhetoric and translate their commitments into visible de-escalation measures. Furthermore, we call on the international community to transition from an "observational" stance to one of active enforcement and monitoring
"The intellectual foundation of West Africa cannot be collateral damage in a territorial dispute," Sall concluded.

The All-Africa Students Union (AASU) is the largest student movement on the continent, representing the interests of millions of students across Africa and advocating for peace, democracy, and the right to quality education.
