The Sustainable Forest /Environment Initiative strongly disagree with the argument that conserving our forests is unnecessary. There are numerous unsustainable and environmentally detrimental activities currently threatening our ecosystem, most notably illegal mining. This form of mining is often conducted by individuals and corporations seeking personal profit without regard for the broader impact on our natural resources and communities.
The question we need to ask is: what are the national benefits of these illegal mining operations that prioritize short-term gains over long-term sustainability?
The answer is disheartening; there are virtually no benefits that outweigh the extensive harm being done to our environment and biodiversity.
Similarly, illegal logging raises critical questions about its value. The loss of timber resources and destruction of habitats contribute to environmental degradation while providing minimal advantage to the country as a whole.
We must consider how our current practices are impacting not only our forests but also the well-being of future generations.
The argument for conservation is compelling and urgent. This is precisely why significant investments have been made in recent years, such as the REDD program in Liberia, aimed at reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. These initiatives highlight the immense importance of preserving our forests, enabling us to ensure a healthier, more sustainable environment for all.
