CONTINUING THE IMPACT: Sister Aid Liberia Strengthens Women’s Economic Power in Lofa County

The momentum continues in Lofa County as Sister Aid Liberia (SALI) advances the distribution of in-kind grants under the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) project, with support from UN Women.

For many women small traders in Lofa, this support goes beyond business, it strengthens their economic voice within their households and communities. With improved tools and resources, these women are better positioned to increase their income, support their families, and contribute more meaningfully to local markets.

As women’s economic power grows, so does their influence. Financial independence creates space for women to participate more confidently in community discussions, leadership spaces, and decision-making processes including political engagement.

This is the broader vision behind SALI’s work: linking economic empowerment to leadership and participation. When women are economically stable, they are more likely to organize, advocate, and take on roles that shape their communities.

In Lofa, this shift is already taking root, one business, one woman, and one community at a time.

CONTINUING THE MOMENTUM: Sister Aid Liberia Reaches Grand Gedeh with In-Kind Grants for Women Entrepreneurs

Strengthening Women’s Role in Peacebuilding Across Liberia

Across Grand Gedeh, Nimba, Lofa, Grand Bassa, B**g, Bomi, and Gbarpolu Counties, Sister Aid Liberia engaged Peace Hut women and members of the Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET) in mediation and conflict resolution training designed to deepen women’s role in community peacebuilding.

In many communities, women are already at the center of resolving disputes and maintaining social cohesion, yet their contributions are often informal and unsupported. Strengthening their skills and positioning within peacebuilding structures is essential to ensuring more inclusive and effective responses to conflict.

The engagement reinforced the value of women-led peace efforts within communities, strengthening their confidence to take on more visible and influential roles in local peace structures at the ward, district, and county levels.

As part of ongoing efforts, Sister Aid Liberia is working toward establishing coordination and tracking mechanisms that will strengthen collaboration between Peace Hut structures and other peacebuilding actors across counties. This approach is intended to support more organized, responsive, and sustained peacebuilding interventions.

This activity is implemented under the project “Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Local Governance and Peacebuilding,” with support from the Government of Ireland.

Beyond Appointment: Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Local Governance Across Liberia

Across Lofa, Nimba, Grand Gedeh, Bomi, Gbarpolu, Grand Bassa, and B**g Counties, Sister Aid Liberia, through the Women’s Political Empowerment and Leadership Clinic, engaged appointed women leaders at county, district, statutory district, and community levels in a transformative leadership and strategic advocacy training aimed at strengthening their effectiveness in public office.

While more women are entering local governance through appointments, many are not provided with the continuous support, practical tools, and strategic guidance needed to navigate governance systems, influence decision-making, and deliver meaningful impact. This initiative was designed to bridge that gap.

Through participatory and practical learning approaches, women leaders strengthened their knowledge in leadership, communication, strategic planning, and advocacy. More importantly, they built the confidence and clarity needed to engage in governance spaces, contribute to local development processes, and advocate for inclusive and gender-responsive priorities.

But the work does not stop here.

Sister Aid Liberia remains committed to providing continued technical support, mentorship, and engagement opportunities to ensure that appointed women leaders do not just occupy positions, but actively demonstrate leadership, influence decisions, and drive change within their communities.

This activity is implemented under the project “Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Local Governance and Peacebuilding,” with support from the Government of Ireland.

Sister Aid Liberia Drives COPPWIL's Constitution Validation Under Liberia Electoral Support Project.

Monrovia, Liberia – Sister Aid Liberia (SALI) continues to drive institutional strengthening for women’s political participation through key milestones through its Women Political Empowerment and Leadership Clinic.

Building on an earlier Strategic Planning and Constitution Review session that brought together women’s wings of political parties to assess progress, identify gaps, and set priorities, SALI has now successfully facilitated the validation of the amended constitution and strategic plan of the Coalition of Political Party Women in Liberia (COPPWIL).

The initial engagement created space for critical reflection on governance, coordination, and advocacy, while the validation marks a decisive step toward a more structured, unified, and impactful coalition.

Implemented in partnership with UN Women under LESP, this work contributes to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting inclusive governance. The project is co-funded by the European Union, Irish Aid, and the Embassy of Sweden, and coordinated by UNDP Liberia in collaboration with NIMD and the National Elections Commission (NEC).

Through these interventions, SALI is reinforcing women’s leadership within political parties, strengthening institutional systems, and ensuring women are better positioned to influence decision-making processes across Liberia.

Sister Aid Liberia Launches In-Kind Grant Distribution for 13 Women Entrepreneurs in Nimba County

Sister Aid Liberia (SALI) has officially begun the distribution of in-kind grants to women-led businesses in Sanniquellie, Nimba County under its project supported by the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF) through UN Women Liberia.

This milestone follows the successful training of 50 women entrepreneurs across Nimba, Lofa, Cape Mount, and Grand Gedeh Counties in business development, bookkeeping, and financial management. SALI also supported the formalization of these businesses, ensuring they were registered and had access to secure financial platforms.

In Nimba, 13 women’s groups received essential tools and equipment to help scale their businesses and strengthen their livelihoods. Beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the support, while local stakeholders commended SALI’s continued commitment to advancing women’s economic empowerment.

Through this initiative, SALI is strengthening women-led enterprises, promoting financial inclusion, and building a foundation for sustainable economic growth in Liberia.

Women oooo Women!

As we follow the recent developments along the Liberia and Guinea border, it is important to situate this moment within the broader realities facing the women and communities of Liberia and our sisters across the Mano River region.

Liberia is still navigating a post-war period of recovery and reconstruction. Many women continue to heal from the legacy of our civil conflicts while confronting persistent challenges such as SGBV, limited participation in decision-making, and the growing social pressures within our communities. Women remain at the forefront of addressing youth drug addiction, advocating for Women, Peace and Security, and working tirelessly for economic and political inclusion.

Across the Mano River region, women share similar struggles. Our markets, farms, and cross-border trade networks connect our communities and sustain thousands of families. For this reason, instability or conflict along our borders threatens not only national security but also the livelihoods and safety of women and children who already carry the greatest burdens in times of crisis.

At this critical moment, we call for calm, restraint, and constructive dialogue. Liberia’s borders are recognised under international law, and our nation continues to engage regional and international mechanisms including the ECOWAS, AU, the MRU, and the UN to ensure that all disputes are resolved peacefully.

We commend the vigilance of citizens in Lofa and the diplomatic leadership of President Joseph Boakai in engaging regional dialogue to prevent escalation.

Women of Liberia and our sisters; let us raise our collective voices for peace. The region has suffered too much from conflict, and the cost has always fallen most heavily on women and children.

Liberia’s place in the comity of nations remains secure. Our history is strong, our diplomacy is respected, and our unity is our shield.

Let us stand together calm, vigilant, and committed to peace.

Sister Aid Liberia Calls on Government to Urgently Address Surge in SGBV Incidents and Prioritize Investment in Prevention and Response Measures.

Sister Aid Liberia, the Women NGOs Secretariat of Liberia (WONGOSOL), and SisterHand Liberia jointly held a high-level strategic engagement with senior Government of Liberia officials from the ministries of Justice and Gender, Children and Social Protection, and the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police, to address the alarming surge in sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) across the country. The meeting yielded firm commitments and practical actions from the mentioned officials who recognized the urgent need to prioritize increased and sustained investment in SGBV prevention and response, applying a multi-actor approach.

During the engagement, the three civil society representatives highlighted the alarming statistics on SGBV and underlying structural and operational challenges currently undermining effective SGBV response services. These include:

- Limited access to comprehensive medical, psychosocial, and legal support for survivors
- Inadequate shelter and safe spaces, particularly outside Monrovia
- Weak referral and case management systems
- Under-resourced Women and Children Protection Sections
- Delays in investigations and prosecutions
- Persistent stigma, fear of retaliation, and low reporting rates
- Insufficient and inconsistent funding for SGBV prevention and response.
- Gaps in implementing existing legal and policy frameworks, including the Domestic Violence Act, the R**e Law, the Children’s Law, and relevant criminal justice provisions.

Sister Aid Liberia and its civil society partners underscored the urgent need for increased domestic budgetary allocations, strengthened multi-sectoral coordination, improved accountability within the justice and security sectors, expansion of survivor-centred services, as well as greater investment in prevention initiatives, particularly those engaging men, boys, and young people to challenge harmful social norms that perpetuate violence. The trio NGOs emphasized that ending SGBV requires collective and sustained action across government institutions, law enforcement, civil society, and communities.

In response, Government representatives reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening SGBV prevention and response mechanisms, and called for closer and broader collaboration with civil society organisations and youth groups to ensure coordinated, survivor-centred, and community-driven interventions to curb sexual and gender-based violence affecting women, girls, and other vulnerable groups in Liberia.

After exhausting discussions, strategizing, and structuring broader engagements, including practical immediate and long-term actions, Government officials and CSO partners collectively reaffirmed their commitment to working together, using multi-actor approach that involves broader stakeholders to tackle head-on the rising waves of SGBV incidents.

Sister Aid Liberia welcomes commitments made by the Government and calls for policy-induced actions, greater political leadership, increased financial investment, and concrete follow-up actions to ensure justice, protection, and dignity for all survivors of sexual and gender-based violence in Liberia.
