New 7-yrs project launched to enhance dignity in Liberia’s healthcare system

This week, we launched the Strengthening Wholistic and Inclusive Systems for Health (SWISH) Project, a 7-year initiative bringing clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene into healthcare systems in Liberia, Pakistan, and Zambia.

In Liberia, the project will be implemented by the Ministry of Health, Republic of Liberia, WaterAid, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia-NPHIL, Community Health Care Initiative INC. and the Govt of Canada in Careysburg and Todee Districts, Montserrado County.

Overall, 2 million more people are to be reached, including 12,400+ in Liberia.

Today marks the official launch of the Project in Liberia 🇱🇷 — a seven-year initiative aimed at strengthening health systems by integrating Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services into healthcare delivery in targeted communities.

It will be implemented by WaterAid, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Republic of Liberia, Community Health Care Initiative INC., the National Public Health Institute of Liberia-NPHIL, and the .

“Together, we’re committed to contribute, so that no one’s health is put at risk due to the absence of clean water, decent toilets, or proper hygiene in Liberia’s healthcare facilities,” said Chuchu Selma, Country Director, WaterAid Liberia.

In Liberia alone, will reach 22,000+ people, contributing to a broader reach of 2 million+ lives across Liberia, Pakistan, and Zambia.

Authorities in Todee District, together with WaterAid, have finalized the review of the first know costed plan to boost access to clean water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH) for the district’s 49K+ residents.

From fixing old facilities to building new ones and promoting hygiene, the plan outlines realistic steps for change.

It is a replicable model for national WASH policy, reviewed along with with key ministries, and civil society organizations.

We welcome two senior colleagues from the WaterAid West Africa Regional and UK Offices.

Halidou Koanda, Regional Programme Director, and Mutala Abdul-Mumin, Senior Advisor for WASH Monitoring and Financing - UK, will technically support the validation of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Costed Plan for Todee District, Rural Montserrado County.

The district leaders, citizens, and civil society groups worked together to develop the costed plan, facilitated by WaterAid Liberia.

WaterAid selected Todee as a focus area to provide comprehensive WASH services for 5 years, until 2028.

For years, families in Guepolor, Todee District walked long distances for unsafe water. Today, clean water flows. Residents now praise WaterAid Liberia and the support from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for intervening.

WaterAid Liberia joined the National WASH Commission Liberia, partners, students, and civil society organizations to celebrate , highlighting hand hygiene as essential to public health and dignity.

“This is why WaterAid is providing modern water facilities, handwashing stations, and decent toilets. We are also promoting behavior change, enabling us to reach thousands of students, as well as people in health care facilities and communities in rural Montserrado and Cape Mount with inclusive hygiene access, said Zazay Kolubah, Communications & Advocacy Manager, WaterAid Liberia 🇱🇷.

He encouraged the government to increase investment and strengthen policies to make these services more available to children and people with special needs.

The day featured student-led dramas, a hand hygiene pledge by everyone, and a sporting event, which reinforced the national theme: WASH to Win!
