CHILD LABOUR IS NOT A CHILD'S JOB

According to the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF, an estimated 138 million children worldwide are engaged in child labour, with 54 million involved in hazardous work that threatens their health, safety, and future.

Children belong in school, on playgrounds, and in safe environments—not in workplaces where their rights are violated.

Let us all play our part in discouraging child labour and protecting every child's right to education, development, and a brighter future.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: WHEN DOES AN EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT END IN LIBERIA?

Many workers believe that an employer can terminate employment at any time and for any reason. However, the Decent Work Act of Liberia, 2015 provides clear rules on when and how an employment contract may lawfully end.

According to Section 13.3 (When a Contract of Employment Ends) and Chapter 14 (Termination of Employment), an employment contract may end through:

* Expiration of a fixed-term contract
* Completion of a specific task for which the employee was hired
* Resignation by the employee
* Mutual agreement between the parties
* Retirement
* Death of the employee
* Lawful termination by the employer for valid reasons recognized by law
Importantly, Section 14.2 states that an employer may terminate employment only where there is a valid reason and the procedures established by the Act are followed.

Furthermore, Section 14.6 requires employers to provide notice of termination, except in cases of grave misconduct under Section 14.3.

Bottom Line: An employment contract does not end simply because an employer says so. The Decent Work Act requires a valid reason, due process, and respect for workers' rights.

An informed worker is an empowered worker.

Child labour occurs when children are forced to take on adult responsibilities that interfere with their education, health, safety, and development.
While children can help with age-appropriate chores, they should not be burdened with work that deprives them of their childhood and future opportunities.

Every child deserves to learn, grow, and thrive in a safe environment not in hazardous work.

Many workers complain about low wages, poor working conditions, and unfair treatment. Yet, when it's time to organize and join a union, many choose not to participate.

Why do you think this happens?
Is it fear, lack of information, mistrust, or something else?

Let's hear your views.

We commend the U.S. Embassy in Liberia for its continued support of workplace safety and occupational health initiatives. Promoting safe and healthy working conditions is essential to protecting workers and improving productivity.

We encourage the expansion of these valuable programs to rural Liberia, especially within the agricultural and agro-industrial sectors where many workers face significant occupational risks. Extending safety education and compliance assistance to these areas will help ensure that all workers benefit from safer workplaces and stronger labor protections.

A safer workforce means a stronger Liberia.

A safe workplace is the foundation of a successful business. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration offers free, confidential compliance assistance and on-site consultations to help employers build strong safety programs. 🤝
