In Liberia, like many parts of the world, girls face specific difficulties in getting quality education. Among the reasons barring them from knowledge and empowerment are discrimination, poverty, and cultural norms. We, however, will not look on as this situation continues. We cannot be blind to the untapped potential of our girls. That is why we formed EMBRACE.
The organization believes in the power of education to transform. For us, education is not about giving someone knowledge but showing them how to unlock their potential, build their confidence, and create better futures. When we educate a girl child, we are not changing her life; we are changing the trajectory of entire communities.
This surely is a journey that needs mentoring. Mentors can provide guidance, support, and encouragement to navigate challenges which surely girls will encounter. They tend to be role models, depicting to girls what may be achieved while one dreams great and strives for excellence.
Through our mentorship programs, we will link these girls into inspiring mentors that walked similar paths and overcame similar hurdles. This role model imparts not only academic knowledge but also life skills and resilience with a belief in one's self. Together, they form bonds across generations that become a network of empowered women uplifting each other and their communities.
Our work, however, is far from over. We need to continue to advocate for policies that genuinely protect girls' education. We need to further invest in schools, teachers, and resources so all girls, no matter their background and condition in life, are able to have quality education. And we need to continue fighting harmful stereotypes and norms that limit girls' potential.
Together, we will build a Liberia where every girl can reach her full potentials, where decisions by every girl make sense towards realizing her dreams, and every girl can contribute to building a better future for herself and the country at large.
