Rice is a stable food for more than 3.5 billion around the world. In African, about 11.5 million tones of rice are consumed per year. Over the last 15 year, rice consumption in Liberia as increased at an annual rate of 4.6 percent, reaching 560,000 metric tons.

Considering several constraints including limited access to technology, inefficient farming practices, low private and public investment, Liberia produces only third of its rice needs.
In liberia there are still vast amounts of agricultural land available, the Wfp (WFP Liberia office) is working with local authorities, partners and rural farming groups to grow rice and tackle the issue of food security.

The WFF is a Youth-led network of partners facilitated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The objective of the WFF is to empower young people from everywhere to actively shape agrifood systems.

We are excited to introduce you to our Transformative Research Challenge Special Prizes, one of the WFF Innovation lab Competitions which address young researchers and students from all over the world to support our agrifood systems and help end hunger. This challenge seeks to address the most pressing challenges of our time, such as: Global One Health, The Role of Water in the agrifood systems, sheep and goat plague (PPR) and other topics to be followed.

How it works?
The TRC is a research-based competition for young researchers and students. The challenge consists of three phases: the first one is an open call for researchers to submit a two-page concept note that we will send to expert reviewers for evaluation to select the semi-finalists. The second phase starts by pairing the semi-finalists teams with mentors to transfer their concept note into a concrete research output. Finally, we will have a second round of evaluation to select our finalists who will pitch their ideas in front of the judges (including Chief Economist and Chief Scientist) at the World Food Forum (WFF) Flagship Event on 16-20 October 2023.

Benefits and Prizes for the winners:
Research grants of up to US$ 10,000 for 10 teams to go from idea to action (For Global One Health Special Prize)
Mentorship: Finalist teams will be paired with mentors who are experts in their fields to help transform their concept note into a research output
Spot at the WFF stage to present your research outputs during the flagship event in October 2023
Travel and accommodation in Rome from 16 – 20 October to attend WFF flagship event
Publication of research findings in one of the FAO’s sectoral publications
As you are a leader in this sector, we would be grateful if you may be able to support us, by sharing this call for applications with your networks. As you will see, we have all the relevant information as well as attached dedicated visuals to share within your networks.

Can You name the types of extension approaches?👨🏾‍🌾👩🏻‍🌾😁

Agriculture Extension Program aims to improve farmers access to helpful information. However, like agriculture, general extension approaches are use in other sectors of our society including, Health services.
Picture #1 below portrays interaction between a farmer and an extension officer in a ‘’Individual/household Approach Method” where approach is most effective for activities to be undertaken by or within the full control of the individual farmer or household. Matters related to the individual farm should, as much as possible, be discussed with the whole family. If the whole family is involved, more problems are highlighted and more experience is brought to the discussion.

Can you name the remaining three extension approaches as portrayed by picture #2,3,4???

1. In Angola, abundance of arable land and climatic conditions are suitable for producing variety of agricultural products. In fact, the country was once a major producer and exporter of agricultural products, including coffee, cotton, and bananas.

2. Agriculture in Ethiopia is the foundation of the country's economy, accounting for half of gross domestic product (GDP), 83.9% of exports, and 80% of total employment.

3. While maize and sugarcane are mostly grown for the domestic markets, tea, coffee, and horticulture make up the country's major exports. In Kenya the agriculture sector employs more than 40 percent of the total population and 70 percent of the rural population.

4. Nigeria's agricultural sector contributes to a significant part of the country's GDP. Between July and September 2021, the agriculture contributed to almost 30 percent of the total GDP, an increase by about six percentage point compared to the previous quarter.

African economies and African societies rely highly on agriculture. The continent’s estimated
33 million smallholder farms are key not just to food production, but also to the livelihoods of the many Africans whose work is linked to the agricultural sector. Besides, Agriculture employs more than half of Africa’s workforce, and smallholder farmers constitute 60% of the population in low- income African countries. However, recently we have experience rapid increased drought and famine in mainly east Africa, caused by climate change, political instability and arm conflict in Somalia and some parts of Ethiopia specifically.

How can we the mitigate the gap between agriculture and Africa’s everlasting hunger-deficiency?

With Africa the second most populated continent in the world, and abundance of workforce to grow more food, what role can Agriculture and So-sio political stability contribute to sustainable food production???
