YOUNG AMBASSADORS FOR PEACE LIBERIA (YAP-LIBERIA) CONGRATULATES THE REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA ON WINNING A SECOND NON-PERMANENT SEAT ON THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL
Monrovia, Liberia – The Young Ambassadors for Peace Liberia (YAP-LIBERIA), a grassroots peacebuilding and conflict prevention youth-led organization, extends its heartfelt congratulations to the Republic of Liberia for being elected, for the second time in history, to a Non-Permanent Seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Liberia’s first historic election to the UNSC was in 1961, a monumental achievement that positioned our nation as a strong advocate for peace, security, and international cooperation. That milestone strengthened Liberia’s diplomatic stature and demonstrated our unwavering commitment to global peace and multilateralism, particularly at a time when post-colonial Africa was striving for greater representation and voice in international decision-making forums.
Today, in 2025, Liberia once again takes its place among the community of nations entrusted with safeguarding international peace and security. This renewed mandate is a testament to our government's diplomatic resilience and international goodwill. YAP-LIBERIA commends His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Jr., for his leadership and vision, as well as Madame Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Liberia’s Foreign Minister and Dean of the Cabinet, whose astute stewardship and the tireless efforts of her team at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have brought this honor to fruition.
This achievement reflects not only Liberia’s global diplomatic credibility but also the enduring work of grassroots actors in promoting peace and stability. As an organization deeply rooted in peacebuilding, democracy promotion, and conflict prevention at the grassroots level, YAP-LIBERIA encourages the Government of Liberia to ensure that the role of young people is meaningfully integrated into this renewed mandate for peace and security.
We specifically urge the government to operationalize and empower the National Youth for Peace and Security Council, launched in September 2024, as a vital mechanism for youth inclusion in national and global peace processes. The collaborative contributions of civil society organizations—such as the Young Ambassadors for Peace, the Mano River Union Youth Parliament, the Federation of Liberian Youth, and many others—must be recognized, valued, and supported.
Let this second term on the UNSC be a platform to amplify the voices of young people, strengthen domestic peace infrastructures, and position Liberia as a model for inclusive diplomacy and peace leadership on the global stage.
Signed:
Varney V. Sheriff
