MIRNET LEADS MENSTRUAL HYGIENE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN AND DONATES SANITARY PADS TO SCHOOLGIRLS.

Monrovia, Liberia – May 28, 2026 – The Ministry of Information Reporter Network (MIRNET) has successfully conducted a Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Campaign at Bishop James W. Ferguson High School in Paynesville, donating 50 packs of sanitary pads to 50 female students as part of efforts to promote menstrual health, hygiene, dignity, and girls’ education.

The initiative which was organized by MIRNET Leadership, seeks to encourage young girls to remain confident and focused on their academic pursuits during their menstrual cycles while also helping to break the stigma and silence surrounding menstruation in schools and communities.

The awareness program brought together students, school authorities, and media practitioners in a collaborative effort aimed at educating and empowering young girls on proper menstrual hygiene practices and reproductive health awareness.

Throughout the engagement, four of MIRNET members delivered educational and motivational messages centered on empowerment, self-confidence, dignity, and personal hygiene for adolescent girls.

Students of the institution expressed excitement and appreciation for the initiative, attentively participating in discussions and actively engaging with the presenters during the awareness session.

Speaking during the program, Jessie Jessica Cox, Reporter of Women Voices and assigned reporter at MOI, addressed the topic: “Women must know they are more important because of the menstrual cycle.”

She emphasized that menstruation is a natural and powerful aspect of womanhood that should never be viewed as a source of shame or limitation.

Another presentation was delivered by Restore Hall, a reporter of Public Agenda Newspaper and a proud member of MIRNET spoke on the topic: “When you experience your menstrual cycle, don’t hide it.”

The presentation encouraged girls to openly embrace their menstrual health and reject societal stigma associated with menstruation.

Margaret Nyumah, Reporter with KMTV-Liberia, Financial Secretary, and assigned reporter at MOI, led the health education segment on the topic: “Get to know about your menstrual health cycle and protect yourself.” She educated students on understanding their menstrual cycles, maintaining proper hygiene, and taking responsibility for their reproductive health and well-being.

Additionally, Jamesetta D. Williams, Reporter of The New Republic Newspaper and Co-Chair of MIRNET, spoke on the topic: “Protect yourself and don’t be ashamed of your cycles; it is your pride.”

She encouraged the students to remain confident, prioritize personal hygiene, and view menstruation as a symbol of strength and womanhood rather than embarrassment.

The program concluded with a collective call for sustained awareness, education, and support for girls’ menstrual health across schools and communities, emphasizing the importance of dignity, openness, and empowerment for young women in Liberia.

MONROVIA, LIBERIA--- The Ministry of Information Reporters Network (MIRNET) proudly joins millions of women, girls, advocates, institutions, and partners around the world in commemorating World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2026, observed annually on May 28.

This global observance seeks to raise awareness about menstrual health, challenge stigma and discrimination, and promote safe and dignified menstrual hygiene practices for women and girls everywhere. As reflected in MIRNET’s official awareness flyer, this year’s engagement is being celebrated under the local theme: “Good Menstrual Hygiene Practices”

World Menstrual Hygiene Day remains a powerful reminder that menstruation is a natural biological process and should never be a source of shame, discrimination, exclusion, or silence.

Globally, millions of girls continue to miss school, lose confidence, and face health risks due to inadequate menstrual hygiene education, poor sanitation facilities, limited access to sanitary products, and harmful societal taboos surrounding menstruation.

MIRNET believes that empowering women and girls through education and awareness is fundamental to promoting dignity, equality, confidence, and public health. The Network therefore remains committed to using media advocacy and community engagement to amplify conversations surrounding menstrual hygiene management and reproductive health awareness across Liberia.

This year’s observance aligns with the growing international movement calling for a “PeriodFriendlyWorld,” where every woman and girl can manage menstruation safely, confidently, and with dignity without fear, embarrassment, or
as part of the planned activities, MIRNET will engage students, young women, community leaders, and stakeholders in discussions centered on:

Menstrual hygiene education, Proper use and disposal of sanitary products, Breaking myths and stigma surrounding menstruation, Promoting self-confidence and dignity among girls, Encouraging support systems within schools and communities.

MIRNET further encourages parents, schools, civil society organizations, policymakers, health practitioners, and the media to collectively support initiatives that advance menstrual health awareness and improve access to menstrual hygiene resources for girls and women throughout Liberia.

The Network especially calls on young girls never to feel ashamed of their menstrual cycle but to embrace it as a natural symbol of womanhood, health, and strength. In the words highlighted within MIRNET’s campaign message: “To every woman or girl, know that your period is your pride; never be ashamed of it because you’re a woman.”

Minister Piah Receives MIRNET Members Elected to RAL Leadership-- Pledges contiued support to professional Journalism and Press Freedom.

MONROVIA, LIBERIA--- The office of the Secretariat, on behalf of the Leadership of the Ministry of Information Reporters Network-MIRNET , proudly presented members of MIRNET who were recently elected during the April 18, 2026 General Congress of the Reporters Association of Liberia (RAL) to the Senior Management Team (SMT) of the Ministry of Information .

Receiving the delegation at his office, the "Driving Engine" of the SMT, Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah, warmly welcomed the newly elected RAL Leadership headed by J.H Webster Clayeh of the FrontPage Africa Newspaper, who remains one of the Ministry’s longest accredited reporters.

Since 2014 up to present, Webster Clayeh has consistently distinguished himself as a punctual, disciplined, professional and human-centered journalist whose commitment to ethical journalism and institutional respect continues to earn admiration across the Liberian media landscape.

As a committed member of MIRNET, his elevation to the presidency of RAL reflects years of resilience, credibility, sacrifice and unwavering dedication to the journalism profession in Liberia.

Minister Piah congratulated the incoming leadership and assured them of the Ministry’s continued support toward strengthening a more professional, productive and mutually respectful relationship with the Liberian media community.

The Minister emphasized the indispensable role journalists play in every democratic society, noting that the media remains a vital pillar in promoting accountability, transparency, public awareness and national development.

He urged journalists to remain committed to factual, balanced and truthful reporting at all times. "Journalists must tell nothing but the truth.

Your profession carries enormous responsibility and public trust. Therefore, you must serve with honesty, lead with integrity and govern by principles,” Minister Piah stated.

He further challenged the newly elected leadership of RAL to demonstrate exemplary leadership characterized by unity, fairness, professionalism, courage and institutional independence in advancing the collective interests of Liberian journalists.

Making a special statement on behalf of the RAL Leadership-Elect, J.H Webster Clayeh thanked the Leadership of the Senior Management Team of the Ministry of Information for the warm reception and support given thus far to Liberian Journalists and media auxiliaries since the the inception of Minister Piah leadership.

He pledged that the incoming leadership of the Reporters Association of Liberia (RAL) will lead with integrity, honesty and professionalism while prioritizing journalists’ welfare, press freedom and institutional credibility.

Clayeh emphasized that journalism must remain committed to truth, accountability and democracy, adding that the new leadership is prepared to work with all media institutions and stakeholders to strengthen responsible journalism and promote a more vibrant media environment in Liberia.

Meanwhile, MIRNET described the election of three of its distinguished members to the national leadership of RAL as a proud and historic achievement not only for the Network, but also for the Ministry family and the Liberian media at large.

MIRNET acknowledged that the ascendency of MIRNET members to strategic leadership positions within RAL — regarded as one of the largest auxiliary bodies of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) — signifies growing confidence in the professionalism, competence and leadership capacity nurtured within MIRNET over the years.

Global Theme for 2026

This year’s international observance is held under the theme: "Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security.”

The theme underscores the indispensable role of independent journalism in fostering peace, countering misinformation, strengthening democratic institutions, and advancing sustainable development in an increasingly complex global information environment.

Local Theme for 2026

MIRNET aligns with the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) in celebrating this year’s national theme "Advancing Press Freedom for Human Rights and Developments", which contextualizes global press freedom ideals within Liberia’s democratic and developmental realities.

Historical Background of World Press Freedom Day

World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly following recommendations from UNESCO.

The day commemorates the 1991 Windhoek Declaration, a landmark statement adopted by African journalists advocating for free, independent, and pluralistic media.

It serves to:
Celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of media freedom globally, defend journalists against attacks, honor media professionals who lost their lives in the line of duty.

MIRNET notes with concern that press freedom globally faces increasing threats, including:
Political interference, Legal restrictions
Economic pressures on media institutions.

Recent global assessments indicate a declining trend in press freedom, emphasizing the urgent need for stronger protections for journalists and media institutions.

Liberia’s Post-War Progress on Press Freedom
Since the end of its civil conflict, Liberia has made significant strides in strengthening press freedom and democratic governance, including:

1. Legal and Institutional Reforms:

Enactment of the Kamara Abdullah Kamara Act (2019), decriminalizing libel and related speech offenses, Improved legal environment for journalists.

2. Media Pluralism:

Expansion of independent radio, print, and digital media institutions.
Increased access to information across the country.

3. Democratic Consolidation

Peaceful elections and active media participation in civic education, growing culture of public accountability.

Despite these gains, challenges remain, including:

Economic vulnerability of media houses
Safety and welfare concerns for journalists

The Role of the Press in Modern Democracy
