From April 13–15, 2026, FAO Liberia joined partners on a high-level field mission to Grand Cape Mount County, where Ambassadors and representatives of European Union Member States experienced firsthand the real impact of the Community-Based Forestry and Protected Area Management (CBFM) Project.
The delegation brought together EU Representative Jeroen Witkamp, Ambassador Isabelle Le Guellec of France, Ambassador Gerard Considine of Ireland, Ambassador Dr. Jakob Haselhuber of Germany, and Ambassador Karl Backéus of Sweden—demonstrating a strong, shared commitment to supporting Liberia’s forests and the communities who depend on them.
In Sembehun, the delegation engaged directly with forest-fringe communities who are actively protecting their environment while improving their livelihoods. Their stories reflected resilience, ownership, and a growing sense of opportunity through sustainable forest management.
In Gbarma Lormeh, the visit took on a special cultural touch, as the FAO, UNDP Liberia and FDA team was warmly welcomed with traditional songs and dances by jubilant residents—an expression of appreciation and pride in the progress being made together.
Through the CBFM Project, communities are gaining practical skills, strengthening governance structures, and building climate-resilient livelihood options that not only protect biodiversity but also create lasting economic value for families.
Implemented by FAO and UNDP with support from the Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia , and under the supervision of the FDA, the project continues to reflect a powerful idea: when communities are empowered, conservation and prosperity can grow side by side.
FAO Liberia remains committed to working hand in hand with partners and communities to ensure Liberia’s forests thrive—while improving the lives of those who call them home.
