Topic: The Importance of the Month of March.
March is a significant month in history because it brings global attention to the achievements of women and the importance of inclusion for people with disabilities. Several observances during this month encourage societies to reflect on progress made and the work that still needs to be done to ensure equality, dignity, and opportunity for all.
Women's History Month is celebrated throughout March to recognize the remarkable contributions women have made to society across generations. For centuries, many women’s achievements in science, education, leadership, business, and community development were overlooked, dismissed or underrepresented in historical records. This month serves as a time to honor those pioneers and to inspire new generations of women and girls to pursue their dreams. It is also a reminder that the strength of families, communities, and nations often rests on the resilience and sacrifices of women who nurture, lead, and uplift those around them.
Within this month, the world celebrates International Women's Day on March 8. This global day recognizes the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women while continuing to advocate for gender equality. Around the world, people hold events, discussions, and celebrations to highlight the progress women have made and the challenges that still exist. International Women’s Day is both a celebration and a call to action—encouraging societies to support education for girls, equal opportunities in leadership, and respect for women’s rights everywhere.
March is also recognized as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, which promotes understanding, acceptance, and inclusion for individuals living with developmental disabilities. The observance highlights the abilities, talents, and contributions of people with disabilities and emphasizes the importance of creating inclusive communities where everyone has the opportunity to learn, work, and thrive. Families, service providers, educators, and advocates use this time to raise awareness about accessibility, support services, and the value of empowering individuals with disabilities to live meaningful and independent lives.
Together, these observances make March a powerful month of reflection and celebration. They remind us to recognize the strength of women, honor their historic and ongoing contributions, and promote a world where individuals with disabilities are fully included and valued. By celebrating these important themes, March encourages communities everywhere to build a future rooted in equality, opportunity, and respect for all.
In recognition of these important global observances, AJC International Support Services (AJC-ISS) has officially designated March 8—the day the world celebrates International Women's Day—as the organization’s official anniversary and birthday. This decision reflects a deep appreciation for the invaluable role women play in families, communities, and societies. Without women, none of us would be here, and their strength, sacrifices, and leadership deserve lasting recognition.
At the same time, AJC-International Support Services (AJC-ISS) remains committed to bringing greater awareness to the many forms of abuse, discrimination, and violence that women continue to face around the world. We also stand firmly in support of individuals with disabilities and the importance of building inclusive communities where everyone is respected, given a chance and empowered. We invite everyone to join us in standing against all forms of discrimination and in working together to uplift women and people with disabilities everywhere. 🌍✊🏾💖🌹
