PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 22, 2026
The Maryland Youth Association (MYA) wishes to express serious concern and strong exception to the recent decision by the Driversβ Union to protest which causes a unilateral increase of the transportation fares on the bus generously donated by the Office of Hon. Anthony F. Williams-District #2, Maryland County for the benefit of university students traveling from Harper to Pleebo.
This bus was provided as a social support initiative to ease the financial burden on students who commute daily in pursuit of higher education. The intention of this gesture was purely humanitarian and educational to ensure that students are not discouraged from attending classes due to high transportation costs.
We are therefore deeply troubled that this noble intervention is being undermined by attempts to raise the fare beyond the agreed and reasonable amount. Such action defeats the very purpose for which the bus was donated and places unnecessary hardship on students, many of whom already struggle with tuition, materials, and living expenses.
The MYA firmly maintains that the fare of 50 Liberian Dollars (LD 50) per student should remain in effect for every trip on this bus. This amount was considered fair, affordable, and aligned with the objective of supporting students rather than exploiting them.
We respectfully call on the management team, local authorities, and all relevant stakeholders to reconsider this decision in the interest of the students and the broader development of Maryland County. Youth education must be protected and prioritized over any action that could hinder access to learning.
The Maryland Youth Association remains committed to advocating for the welfare of students and calls for calm, dialogue, and a swift resolution to this matter.
Signed:
Maryland Youth Association (MYA)
