About 30 CSOs and CBOs Benefit from Land Rights and Climate Change Training in Gbarnga.

About thirty (30) Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) are benefiting from a three-day training on land rights and climate change being held at the Development Education Network-Liberia (DEN-L) compound in Gbarnga City, B**g County.

The training is being organized under the European Union-funded Strengthening Community Actions for Land and Economic Security (SCALES) Project, with the aim of enhancing participants’ knowledge of land rights, climate change, economic empowerment, and peaceful community development.

The initiative is being implemented by DEN-L in partnership with the Rights and Rice Foundation (RRF), JSGB & Associates Legal Services for Women and Children, and the Liberia Land Authority (LLA).

It brings together community leaders, women, youth, persons with disabilities, and representatives of various civil society groups.

Speaking during the opening program, DEN-L Deputy Director for Programs, Madam Beatrice K. Sondah, highlighted the significance of the organization’s butterfly symbol, describing it as harmless and representative of transparency, accountability, justice, and equal opportunity at all levels.

Madam Sondah urged participants to pay keen attention to the three-day training and actively participate in discussions surrounding Liberia’s Land Rights Act and climate change.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Civil Society Organizations, Mr. Aaron Fenla Sackie, called for the assignment of a specialized Land Judge to handle land-related cases in the county.

Mr. Sackie said Liberia’s land sector faces complex and longstanding challenges that require serious attention.

He argued that a specialized judge with expertise in land matters would help improve the resolution of land disputes, similar to the specialized approach used by the Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) Court.
Representatives of the Federation of Liberian Youth, Women in Peacebuilding Network (WIPNET), and persons with disabilities also expressed appreciation to the organizers for the training.

The representatives, including Jerry Forkpah,Madam Ceru M. Liyean, and Arthur Bondo, described the training as timely and impactful for their respective sectors. They pledged their commitment to actively participating throughout the training.

Giving an overview of the SCALES Project, Mr. Moses B. Kollie said the initiative is designed to strengthen land governance and empower communities with the knowledge and skills needed to protect their land rights while promoting economic opportunities and peaceful coexistence.

According to Mr. Kollie, increasing public awareness of land rights is critical to preventing land disputes and ensuring that citizens understand their rights and responsibilities under Liberia’s Land Rights Act.
He further explained that the SCALES Project promotes community participation in decision-making, encourages gender inclusion, and supports initiatives aimed at improving household incomes through sustainable local economic activities.

The three-year SCALES Project is being implemented by DEN-L, RRF, JSGB & Associates Legal Services for Women and Children, and the Liberia Land Authority, with funding from the European Union in B**g, Nimba, and Lofa Counties.

The Liberia National Red Cross Society (LNRCS), in partnership with the Development Education Network-Liberia (DEN-L), has concluded a five-day capacity-building training under the Sustainable Communities Engaged for Change (SUCEC) Project in Sanniquellie City, Nimba County.

The training brought together 20 participants, from Maryland, Gbarpolu, Grand Gedleh, River Cess, Nimba, including Staff from Montserrado counties.

The SUCEC Project is being implemented across six of the Liberia National Red Cross Society’s 15 chapters, with the goal of strengthening the institution’s operational capacity, improving financial sustainability, and empowering communities to build resilience against disasters and the growing impacts of climate change.

The initiative also seeks to promote sustainable and well-functioning branches and chapters capable of effectively supporting communities through resilience-building, disaster preparedness, and risk-reduction activities.

Speaking during the closing of the training, the Deputy Director for Programs expressed appreciation to the Liberia National Red Cross Society for selecting DEN-L as a partner to provide capacity-building support to its staff.

According to her, the partnership demonstrates the importance of collaboration among local organizations in strengthening institutional capacity and improving community-based disaster preparedness and resilience.

Madam Beatrice K. Sonah also welcomed the partnership and expressed optimism that continued collaboration between the two organizations would contribute to strengthening their relationship and supporting efforts toward a more self-sufficient and resilient Liberia.

Thirty (30) representatives of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) are benefiting from a three-day training on land rights, climate change, economic empowerment, and peaceful community development in Ganta City, Nimba County.

The training is being conducted under the European Union-funded Strengthening Community Actions for Land and Economic Security (SCALES) Project.

The initiative is organized by the Development Education Network-Liberia (DEN-L), in partnership with the Rights and Rice Foundation (RRF), JSGB & Associates Legal Services for Women and Children, and the Liberia Land Authority (LLA).

The training brings together community leaders, women, youth, civil society actors, and other community representatives to enhance their understanding of Liberia's Land Rights Act, climate change issues, sustainable livelihoods, and community-based approaches to peaceful development.

Speaking during the official opening ceremony, the proxy for the Ganta City Mayor, Samuel S. Paye, thanked the organizers for selecting Ganta as the venue for the training.

Mr. Paye said the participation of citizens from Ganta and surrounding communities would provide an opportunity for them to openly discuss challenges affecting their respective communities and explore possible solutions.

The Head of Inspection of the Ganta City Corporation also urged participants to pay keen attention throughout the training and actively participate in the discussions.

For his part, SCALES Program Officer Moses B. Kollie said the project is a three-year initiative running from 2026 to 2028 and being implemented in B**g, Nimba, and Lofa Counties.

According to Mr. Kollie, the SCALES Project is designed to strengthen land governance and empower communities with the knowledge and skills needed to protect their land rights while promoting economic opportunities and peaceful coexistence.

He emphasized that increasing public awareness of land rights is critical to preventing land-related disputes and ensuring that citizens understand their rights and responsibilities under Liberia's Land Rights Act.

Mr. Kollie further noted that the SCALES Project promotes community participation in decision-making, gender inclusion, and initiatives aimed at improving household incomes through sustainable local economic activities.

Speaking in an interview, Nimba County Land Administrator Eddie Beangar commended the European Union and implementing partners for engaging citizens in an open dialogue on Liberia's land laws.

Mr. Beangar explained that the Liberia Land Authority, established under the 2016 Land Rights Act, has the responsibility of overseeing land-related matters in Liberia.

He identified private land, customary land, public land, and government land as key categories requiring increased public awareness to help citizens better understand land ownership and management.

The Nimba County Land Administrator warned that land disputes are likely to continue as the population grows and demand for land increases.
He therefore stressed the importance of educating citizens about land rights and responsibilities as a means of reducing conflicts and promoting peaceful communities.

Meanwhile, participants described the training as timely , impactful and another learning opportunity.

James Torla and Sharon Fann, who represented civil society groups at the training, called on the implementing partners to expand the initiative to other parts of Nimba County.

They said the knowledge gained from the training would be shared with community members in their respective areas.

The three-day training, which began on Monday, is expected to conclude on Wednesday in Ganta City, Nimba County.

EU-Funded SCALES Project Strengthens Community Capacity on Land Rights and Economic Security in Salayea

Salayea District, Lofa County – Residents of Lofa County have benefited from a community training initiative under the European Union-funded Strengthening Community Actions for Land and Economic Security (SCALES) project, aimed at enhancing knowledge of land rights, economic empowerment, and peaceful community development.

The training, organized by the Development Education Network-Liberia (DEN-L) in partnership with the Rights and Rice Foundation (RRF), JSGB & Associates Legal Services for Women and Children, and the Liberia Land Authority (LLA), brought together community leaders, women, youth, and other local residents to strengthen their understanding of Liberia's Land Rights Act and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Speaking during the training, facilitator Moses B. Kollie said the project is designed to empower communities with the knowledge and skills needed to protect their land rights while promoting economic opportunities and peaceful coexistence.

According to him, increasing public awareness of land rights is critical to preventing land disputes and ensuring that citizens fully understand their rights and responsibilities under Liberia's Land Rights Act.

Participants described the training as timely, informative, and beneficial.

One participant, Mrs. Deddeh Kollie Karmo, said the training had significantly improved her understanding of land rights and community development.

She noted that the knowledge gained would enable her to educate others in her community and encourage the peaceful resolution of land-related disputes.
