Every year, the Swedish Institute offers the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals - a fully funded masterβs scholarship in fields like governance, public health, entrepreneurship, innovation and STEM.
This fall, new SI Scholars began their studies in Sweden. Follow along as we introduce and share their experiences, one story at a time.
π¬ Whatβs your name and age?
Iβm Christopher D.J Walker, 28 years old.
π¬ What are you studying in Sweden?
Iβm studying Business Process Control and Supply Chain Management.
π¬ What was your bachelorβs subject, and what did you do before moving to Sweden?
I did my undergraduate program in Business Administration. Before moving to Sweden, I worked as an Administrative Assistant/Project Intern and Logistics Officer for the National Catholic Health Council. The role has made me continue to be curious about taking on new challenges and solving institutional problems through learning and building more effective and efficient systems that all actors can easily roll with.
When I was accepted into the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals, two emotions were stuck: excitement and worry. I was excited about advancing in my professional journey through continuous career development, but also worried about the changing environment and going to a place where I didnβt know anyone. But since challenges are my motivation, I moved on.
π¬ How would you describe your first months in Sweden?
A new environment is always challenging at first. My first months were about: Networking, going from one student program to another, adapting to the daily life routine here in Sweden, going to grocery stores using Google Maps, getting to change from one weather condition to a new one, and getting used to the Swedish way of learning (independence, curiosity, critical thinking, and research).
Fun fact: Everything about Sweden is based on sustainability; therefore, we even separate trash for sustainable energy production (I love their recycling principle).
