Every year, the Swedish Institute offers the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals - a fully funded master’s scholarship in fields like governance, public health, entrepreneurship, innovation and STEM.

This fall, new SI Scholars began their studies in Sweden. Follow along as we introduce and share their experiences, one story at a time.

πŸ’¬ What’s your name and age?
I’m Christopher D.J Walker, 28 years old.

πŸ’¬ What are you studying in Sweden?
I’m studying Business Process Control and Supply Chain Management.

πŸ’¬ What was your bachelor’s subject, and what did you do before moving to Sweden?
I did my undergraduate program in Business Administration. Before moving to Sweden, I worked as an Administrative Assistant/Project Intern and Logistics Officer for the National Catholic Health Council. The role has made me continue to be curious about taking on new challenges and solving institutional problems through learning and building more effective and efficient systems that all actors can easily roll with.

When I was accepted into the SI Scholarship for Global Professionals, two emotions were stuck: excitement and worry. I was excited about advancing in my professional journey through continuous career development, but also worried about the changing environment and going to a place where I didn’t know anyone. But since challenges are my motivation, I moved on.

πŸ’¬ How would you describe your first months in Sweden?
A new environment is always challenging at first. My first months were about: Networking, going from one student program to another, adapting to the daily life routine here in Sweden, going to grocery stores using Google Maps, getting to change from one weather condition to a new one, and getting used to the Swedish way of learning (independence, curiosity, critical thinking, and research).

Fun fact: Everything about Sweden is based on sustainability; therefore, we even separate trash for sustainable energy production (I love their recycling principle).

FAQ: SI Scholarship for Global Professionals

❓ Question: Who can sign the 'Proof of Work and Leadership Experience' form?

πŸ‘‰ Our answer: The person who signs for your work and leadership experience should be someone who knows you in a professional rather than a personal capacity.

β–ͺ️ It should be someone who knows about your experience at the company/organisation. It does not have to be your direct manager. It can be, for example, the HR manager or the head of the organisation, as long as he/she can comment on your experience on behalf of your employer.

β–ͺ️ If you work in a student organisation at your university, you may ask a staff at the university who knows about your experience to certify it and it can be stamped by either the university or the organisation.

β–ͺ️ If you work as a freelancer, you may ask the professional association or agency, where you are registered as a freelancer or receive work from, to sign and stamp.

β–ͺ️ If you work in a family business or you are the owner, we can accept a signature from a client or a staff that works at your company but who is ❌ not a family member. The client should not be a private person but rather a company/organisation. The client is only allowed to certify the working hours that you have worked for them. The stamp should be the official stamp of the company/organisation.
