PROTECT, RESPECT AND RECOGNIZE HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS

The International Human Rights Council–USA (IHRC-USA) issues an urgent international call for the protection of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) everywhere.

Human Rights Defenders work peacefully and lawfully to promote human dignity, equality, justice, fundamental freedoms, accountability and peace.

They educate communities, document and report human rights concerns, support vulnerable people, promote equality and non-discrimination, advocate for justice, and contribute to peaceful and accountable societies.

🚨 Human Rights Defenders Must Be Protected

The arbitrary arrest, detention, torture, ill-treatment, intimidation, harassment, retaliation and enforced disappearance of Human Rights Defenders must stop immediately.

IHRC-USA calls upon Governments, States, national institutions, law-enforcement authorities, judicial institutions and the international community to:

🔹 Respect the legitimate and peaceful work of Human Rights Defenders.
🔹 Protect them from threats, violence, intimidation and retaliation.
🔹 Prevent arbitrary detention, torture and enforced disappearance.
🔹 Ensure independent, impartial and effective investigations into alleged violations.
🔹 Respect freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association in accordance with applicable law.
🔹 Create a safe and enabling environment for human rights work.
🔹 Recognize the contribution of Human Rights Defenders to justice, equality, peace and the rule of law.
🔹 Ensure that peaceful human rights advocacy is not criminalized merely because it raises concerns about institutions, policies or practices.

El Niño is a natural climate phenomenon linked to unusual warming of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Its effects can extend far beyond the Pacific, influencing rainfall, temperature, agriculture, water resources and ecosystems around the world.

🌧️ Why floods in some places and droughts in others?

El Niño changes atmospheric circulation and the distribution of heat and moisture.

➡️ Some regions may experience increased rainfall → flooding and landslides.

➡️ Other regions may experience reduced rainfall → drought, water shortages and increased wildfire risk.

Its impacts vary by country, season and the interaction of other climate systems.

🌍 Regions That Can Be Significantly Affected by El Niño
