We are honored to highlight Keynote Speech I at the 9th SLAAI International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (SLAAI-ICAI) 2025, delivered by Dr. Romesh Ranawana, Group Chief Analytics and AI Officer at Dialog Axiata.

Title: A Paradigm Shift in Research: From Manual Inquiry to AI Assistant

In this thought-provoking keynote, Dr. Ranawana explored how scientific research is evolving in the age of large language model assistants. He emphasized the need to move beyond using AI as a simple search tool and instead adopt it as a reproducible, ethical, and outcome-aligned scientific instrument.

Introducing the Coverage Impact Protocol, the talk focused on three key pillars:
• Widen the evidence base through calibrated, citation-first and multilingual AI-supported research workflows
• Align research with real-world purpose using impact-driven metrics and theory-of-change frameworks
• Decide what to pilot, scale, or stop by ensuring transparency, reproducibility, and measurable value beyond novelty

The keynote also demonstrated how responsible AI adoption can support national-scale goals such as faster reviews, safer decision-making, and stronger public guidance, while maintaining academic integrity.

🌟 Where Innovation Met Inspiration – SLAAl 2025 🌟

The 9th Sri Lanka Association for Artificial Intelligence – International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (SLAAl–ICAI 2025) was successfully held on 20th November 2025 at The Open University of Sri Lanka, Nawala, Nugegoda.

This year’s conference brought together a vibrant community of researchers, academics, industry experts, and AI enthusiasts from across the globe.
SLAAl–ICAI 2025 received an impressive 187 full paper submissions, showcasing cutting-edge contributions in artificial intelligence and its diverse applications. Following a rigorous double-blind review process:

✅ 86 papers were accepted
✅ 74 papers were presented
✅ 14 technical sessions were conducted

All accepted and presented papers will be published in IEEE Xplore.

The conference featured:

✨ Interactive and insightful technical discussions
✨ Valuable networking sessions bridging academia and industry

🚀 It’s a Wrap! A Historic Milestone for Sri Lankan AI 🇱🇰🤖

We are thrilled to announce the successful conclusion of the SLAAI Best Undergraduate AI Project Award 2025!

Organized by the Sri Lanka Association for Artificial Intelligence (SLAAI) for the very first time, this national initiative was launched to recognize outstanding AI research conducted by undergraduates between 2023 and 2025. The creativity and innovation displayed have truly proven that the future of AI in Sri Lanka is in safe hands.

Here is a look back at the journey:

✅ Initial Screening (Oct 10): Led by Dr. Anuradha Ariyaratne, Dr. Budditha Hettige, and Dr. Kalani Ilmini.

✅ First-Round Selection (Oct 14): A distinguished academic panel shortlisted 14 promising projects from a competitive pool. Panel: Prof. Uditha Rathnayaka, Prof. Thushari De Silva, Dr. Budditha Hettige, Dr. Kalani Ilmini, Dr. Mihirini Wagarachchi, Dr. Menaka Ranasingha, Dr. Anuradha Ariyaratne, and Dr. Dushyanthi Vidanage.

✅ The Grand Finale (Oct 25): The final demonstrations were evaluated by an expert panel including Prof. Kapila Rathnayaka, Prof. Sidath Liyanage, Prof. Uditha Rathnayaka, Dr. Budditha Hettige, Dr. Mihirini Wagarachchi, Dr. Anuradha Ariyaratne, and Dr. Kalani Ilmini.

🏆 The Result: After intense deliberation, 5 exceptional teams were selected for the awards.

These prestigious awards were presented on November 20, 2025, at the 9th SLAAI International Conference on Artificial Intelligence, hosted by the Open University of Sri Lanka.
