February 8th movement

February 8th movement Advocating for A Powerful Coordinating and an Independent Monitoring Mechanism through
the New Disability Rights Act Why "February 8th Movement"?

To mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, like
minded individuals and DPOs in the disability sector, have come
together, to take back disability to the hands of the disabled. On February 8th 2016, the government of
Sri Lanka ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with
Disabilities (UNCRPD), which was a result of a collective effort by
all stakeholders in the disabili

ty community. This movement is inspired by the afore mentioned action, on which we
wish to build upon, to make sure that any issues/concerns relating to
disability, is not looked at in a "charity mentality", but with the
spirit of empowering the disabled".
