Learning, Sharing, and Dialogue with International Students 🌍

SEVANATHA Urban Resource Centre was pleased to host a group of Master’s students in Sociology and academics from the University of Agder, Norway, during their academic field visit to Sri Lanka in May 2026.
The team, which consists of students from Norway, Brazil, and Uganda, together with a professor and field coordinator, visited SEVANATHA on 06th May. During the visit, an interactive presentation made by the Executive Director and the project team highlighted SEVANATHA’s long-standing experiences in community-based housing and urban development in Sri Lanka.

The session covered,

🔶SEVANATHA’s mission, approach, past and ongoing initiatives

🔶Community-based interventions and major projects implemented by SEVENATHA

🔶Experiences in working with underserved urban communities

🔶The Colombo Settlements Surveys in 2002, 2012 and 2023

🔶Sri Lanka’s housing sector and housing policies, tracing their evolution since the colonial era to the present and highlighting current challenges and directions

The visit concluded with a warm and constructive discussion among the team on the key aspects of the presentation.
SEVANATHA values these knowledge-sharing opportunities that promote international learning, dialogue, and collaboration in urban development and warmly welcomes future engagement with students, researchers, and academic institutions interested in urban development and community-centred practices in Sri Lanka.

𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙂𝙡𝙤𝙗𝙖𝙡 𝙍𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙝 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝 𝙇𝙤𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 🌍

At SEVANATHA Urban Resource Centre, we are proud to support collaborations that connect global research with local communities.
Recently, we facilitated a research activity with two Master’s Degree students from Sweden to explore the long-term impacts of the Metro Colombo Urban Development Project (MCUDP), funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development of Sri Lanka in 2014.

The fieldwork included a visit to the low-income settlements along St. Sebastian Canal, Maithri Bodiraja Mawatha (Colombo 12), and the relocation site at Methsada Sevana, a High-Rise apartment housing scheme in Henemulla. Through community interactions, focus group discussions, and field observations, the researchers gained insights into project interventions such as canal widening, drainage upgrading, road development, and reduced flood risks while also understanding the social and economic challenges faced by relocated households, including aspects of the relocation process, livelihood adjustments, limited living space, and adapting to apartment lifestyle and environment, etc.
As field co-ordinators, SEVANATHA supported meaningful engagement between researchers and communities, ensuring local voices remained central to the research process while capturing both the physical and social dimensions and impacts of urban resettlement.

ජීව වායුව | Biogas

ජීව වායුව නිපදවනු ලබන්නේ සතුන්ගේ වසූරු , මුළුතැන්ගෙයි අපද්‍රව්‍ය සහ ශාක කොටස් වැනි කාබනික ද්‍රව්‍ය වාතය රහිත පරිසරයක (Anaerobic Digestion) දිරාපත් වීමට සැලැස්වීමෙනි. මෙහිදී ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් මෙතේන් (Methane) වායුව නිපදවේ.

භාවිතය: ප්‍රධාන වශයෙන් ආහාර පිසීමට (LP ගෑස් වෙනුවට) සහ කුඩා පරිමාණයේ විදුලි ජනක යන්ත්‍ර ක්‍රියා කරවීමට.

අතුරු ඵල: ඉතිරි වන රොන් මඩ (Slurry) ඉතා උසස් තත්ත්වයේ කාබනික පොහොරක් ලෙස ගොවිතැනට යොදා ගත හැක.

ලංකාවට ඇති වාසි: නිවෙස් මට්ටමින් හෝ මහා පරිමාණ ගොවිපළවල් (උදා: කුකුළු/හරක් පට්ටි) ආශ්‍රිතව අඩු පිරිවැයකින් ස්ථාපනය කළ හැකිය.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාව වැනි කෘෂිකාර්මික සහ නිවර්තන කලාපීය රටකට ජීව වායුව (Biogas) යනු ඉතාමත් ප්‍රායෝගික මෙන්ම ආර්ථිකමය වශයෙන් වාසිදායක විසඳුමකි. මෙහිදී සිදුවන්නේ බැක්ටීරියා මගින් කාබනික ද්‍රව්‍ය වාතය රහිතව දිරාපත් කර මෙතේන් වායුව නිපදවීමයි.
ලංකාවට ඇති ප්‍රායෝගික හැකියාව

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ පවතින සම්පත් අනුව මෙය ප්‍රධාන ක්ෂේත්‍ර 3ක් ඔස්සේ ක්‍රියාත්මක කළ හැකිය:

කෘෂිකාර්මික සහ සත්ව පාලන අපද්‍රව්‍ය:

කුරුණෑගල, අනුරාධපුරය වැනි ප්‍රදේශවල ඇති මහා පරිමාණ කුකුළු සහ හරක් පට්ටිවලින් ඉවතලන වසූරිය (Dung) මගින් විශාල වශයෙන් වායුව නිපදවිය හැක. දැනටමත් ඇතැම් ගොවිපළවල් තමන්ට අවශ්‍ය විදුලිය සහ තාපය මෙයින් සපුරා ගනී.

නාගරික ඝන අපද්‍රව්‍ය (Municipal Solid Waste):

කොළඹ සහ මහනුවර වැනි ප්‍රධාන නගරවල දිනකට එකතු වන කුණු කසළවලින් වැඩි ප්‍රතිශතයක් ආහාර සහ කාබනික අපද්‍රව්‍ය වේ. මේවා විධිමත් 'ජීව වායු ඒකක' (Biogas Digesters) වෙත යොමු කිරීමෙන් නගරයට අවශ්‍ය විදුලිය නිපදවීමට මෙන්ම කුණු ප්‍රශ්නයට විසඳුම් ලබා දීමටත් හැකිය.

ගෘහස්ථ ඒකක:

ලංකාවේ ග්‍රාමීය මෙන්ම අර්ධ නාගරික නිවාසවලට කුඩා ප්‍රමාණයේ ජීව වායු ඒකකයක් (Domestic Biogas Unit) ස්ථාපනය කිරීම ඉතා පහසුය. දෛනික මුළුතැන්ගෙයි අපද්‍රව්‍ය යොදාගෙන ලබාගන්නා වායුවෙන් LP ගෑස් භාවිතය 50% - 100% දක්වා අඩු කරගත හැක.

ලෝකයේ සාර්ථක නිදසුන්

ලෝකයේ බොහෝ රටවල් ජීව වායුව බලශක්ති අර්බුදයට විසඳුමක් ලෙස සාර්ථකව භාවිත කරයි:

චීනය: ලොව වැඩිම ගෘහස්ථ ජීව වායු ඒකක ප්‍රමාණයක් ඇත්තේ චීනයේය (මිලියන 40කට අධිකයි). ඔවුන් රජයේ සහනාධාර ලබා දෙමින් ගොවි නිවෙස්වලට මෙම තාක්ෂණය හඳුන්වා දී ඇත.

ජර්මනිය: යුරෝපයේ ජීව වායු නිෂ්පාදනයේ පෙරමුණ ගෙන සිටී. ඔවුන් මහා පරිමාණ කර්මාන්තශාලා හරහා ජාතික විදුලි පද්ධතියට සහ වාහන ඉන්ධන (Bio-CNG) ලෙස ජීව වායුව සැපයීම සිදු කරයි.

ඉන්දියාව: "SATAT" වැනි වැඩසටහන් හරහා කෘෂි අපද්‍රව්‍යවලින් සම්පීඩිත ජීව වායුව (Compressed Biogas) නිපදවා වාහන සඳහා බෙදා හැරීමේ මධ්‍යස්ථාන ඉදිකර ඇත.

ඩෙන්මාර්කය: ඔවුන්ගේ ස්වභාවික වායු අවශ්‍යතාවයෙන් විශාල ප්‍රතිශතයක් ජෛව වායුවෙන් සපුරා ගැනීමට ඔවුන් සමත් වී ඇත.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවට ඇති විශේෂ වාසි

කාලගුණය: ජීව වායුව නිපදවන බැක්ටීරියා හොඳින් ක්‍රියාත්මක වීමට සෙන්ටිග්‍රේඩ් 30°C - 35°C පමණ උෂ්ණත්වයක් අවශ්‍ය වේ. ලංකාවේ වසර පුරා පවතින උණුසුම් දේශගුණය නිසා යුරෝපීය රටවල මෙන් මෙයට අමතර තාපයක් ලබා දීමට (Heating) අවශ්‍ය නොවේ.

කාබනික පොහොර: ජීව වායු ඒකකයෙන් පිටවන දියරය (Slurry) වගාවන් සඳහා ඉතා උසස් තත්ත්වයේ කාබනික පොහොරක් ලෙස භාවිත කළ හැක. මෙය රසායනික පොහොර ආනයනය අඩු කිරීමට ද දායක වේ.

ඔබ දන්නවාද? දිනකට කුණු කිලෝ 2ක් පමණ නිපදවන සාමාන්‍ය නිවසකට වර්ග මීටර් 1ක කුඩා ජීව වායු ඒකකයකින් දිනකට පැය 2ක් පමණ ආහාර පිසීමට අවශ්‍ය වායුව ලබාගත හැක.

🌍 𝘼𝙘𝙩4𝘾𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚 – 𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙝 𝘾𝙡𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝘼𝙢𝙗𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙧𝙨 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙎𝙝𝙤𝙬𝙘𝙖𝙨𝙚 | 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙎𝙧𝙞 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙖

The 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝟰𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 showcase event of the Youth Climate Ambassadors Project, implemented by the British Council in partnership with SEVANATHA, was successfully held on 𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗿𝗶 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗸𝗮 (𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗟).
The event created a platform for 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀 to present their climate action initiatives, highlighting innovative ideas and practical solutions to address environmental challenges.

Three youth-led climate projects were showcased during the event:

♻️ 𝗕𝗶𝗼 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗺: 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 & 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁
🌾 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 – 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲-𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀

In parallel with the showcase, the 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗟 organized a pitching competition encouraging students to present 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀, further inspiring youth engagement and creativity in climate solutions.

The event brought together representatives from the 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹, the 𝗦𝗘𝗩𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗔 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺, and the 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, making it an inspiring platform to celebrate youth leadership in climate action and environmental sustainability.

🌱 𝙊𝙪𝙧 𝙑𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙊𝙬𝙣 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙨 𝙞𝙣 𝘼𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣!

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀 (𝗬𝗖𝗔) 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗼𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 at the University of Ruhuna was successfully held on 𝟲𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 at the Main Auditorium.

After months of commitment, teamwork, and creative thinking, participants of the British Council Youth Climate Ambassadors Programme implemented in partnership with SEVANATHA Urban Resource Centre presented their innovative climate action projects, showcasing practical solutions to address pressing local environmental challenges. 🌍✨

Five dynamic teams showcased their innovative climate solutions and key focus areas:

🌼 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗲𝗲𝘀 – Enhancing bee habitats and honey production to support pollination and biodiversity. 🐝🍯
🌿𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗘𝗰𝗼 𝗔𝘇𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮 – Promoting Azolla as a nitrogen-rich organic fertilizer to improve sustainable agriculture. 🌱
🌳 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘂 𝗩𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗻– Applying the Miyawaki forest model to create dense, fast-growing urban mini forests. 🌳🌿
🧭 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀 – 𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗡𝗲𝘁 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼: Measuring and raising awareness on carbon footprints to guide climate-friendly actions. ♻️
🪰 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗙𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱 – Converting food waste into high-protein poultry feed through Black Soldier Fly farming, supporting circular economy solutions. 🌍♻️🐔

The event brought together 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀, 𝗦𝗘𝗩𝗔𝗡𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗔 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳, 𝗕𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗱𝗼𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀.
