Dilmah Conservation

Dilmah Conservation Established by Dilmah Founder Merrill J. Fernando to make a better tea for the planet. Dilmah Founder Merrill J.

Fernando pledged in the 1950s to make his business a matter of human service. That pledge is fulfilled in the work of the MJF Charitavle Foundation www.mjffoundation.org. In 2007, with the addition of a sixth pillar to The Five Pillars of Dilmah, Dilmah Conservation was established to recognise the enduring connection that Dilmah, a tea company, has with the environment. Dilmah Conservation utilis

es revenue from the global earnings of Dilmah to design, fund and manage initiatives aimed at promoting biodiversity and sustainable interaction with the environment. These extend to species and terrestrial and marine ecosystem conservation as well as protection of unique cultural heritage such as that of the ancient Veddah people of Sri Lanka.

The wild holds stories many never get to witness.

That’s where photography becomes powerful - it helps us share these encounters with others. But capturing these images should never come at the cost of disturbing wildlife or disrupting their natural behaviour. Wildlife photography is as much about patience and respect as it is about skill. It’s not always about the charismatic species either, there’s so much beauty in the small, often overlooked details. Here are a few tips to help you capture these moments responsibly, and a glimpse into what wildlife photography truly entails.

Take a look at theses tips, and if you’ve got worthy shots, we’d love to see them in the photography competition. Guidelines and submission link are in the bio.

A garden without barriers🪴

Our wheelchair garden at the Moratuwa Centre is something truly special. The Moratuwa Centre is home to the MJF Charitable Foundation, along with Dilmah Conservation’s butterfly garden, organic garden, and arboretum. So, having created yet another space, just for our little Rainbow kids at the Charitable Foundation within their own environment, feels just right. Because everyone deserves to feel included.

Without barriers, they are free to connect with nature, contribute in their own way, and even grow their own food. Within this little space is a lot of learning, growing, watering, sensing, and laughter, making it a place filled with purpose, pride, and possibility. 🌿

We were happy to host Nettai at our Endane Biodiversity Corridor.

From local roots to global interest.
It’s always rewarding to see international curiosity and inspiration around our work. As a newly established organization focused on nature observation and environmental conservation through field visits and community-based learning, Nettai found this a meaningful space to explore tropical ecosystems—especially with our location close to the Sinharaja Forest Reserve. As they continue to grow and expand their work, we hope this experience added value to their journey. 🌿

Planting Seeds of Thought About Nature in young minds🌱

People visit our Endane Biodiversity Corridor to learn about the concept, to be part of conservation, to discover threatened plant species in our nursery, and to find inspiration in nature.
And one time, we turned to our little visitors - our future, and asked them what they felt, experienced, and learned.
Their answers came as colourful hand-drawn pictures, poems, little essays, and heartfelt thank-you notes, each one a small but powerful reflection of their day.
And as we read through them, we felt proud, knowing that we’ve planted seeds of thought about nature in their minds.

We couldn’t be prouder reading through them.
And we thought… you might like to see a few of them too. 💚

Our brains weren't designed for constant pings and blue light. Spending intentional time in nature triggers "soft fascination," a state that allows your prefrontal cortex to rest while actively lowering cortisol levels. It’s not just a break; it’s a biological rewire to move your nervous system from "always on" to deep relaxation.

Swipe through for 5 rewarding ways to reset your brain and reconnect with nature at our One Earth Centre in Moratuwa ➡️

Walk in: Wednesdays and Saturdays
Visits on other days can be arranged upon request. For inquiries, contact Prasad at 071 551 7123.

Building a generation of wetland guardians.

What makes our Sobha Mithuro nature education sessions for kids at Beddagana Wetland Park so impactful is the passion Narmadha Dangamapola brings to every lesson. She doesn't just teach facts; she tells the story of how wetlands regenerate life and shares the wonder of the creatures that call them home.

By engaging children from the surrounding communities, we are empowering local catalysts for conservation. Because they live nearby, these students can visit often, grow to love this ecosystem, and ultimately lead the action to protect it.

These captures are from our latest session.

Not submitted yet? Are a few questions holding you back? With just one month left for submissions to the One Earth Competition, we thought it’s best to clear things up.

We hope we’ve covered your questions, but if not, feel free to reach out. Or better yet, take that step and submit before it’s too late.

From vision to screen🌱

The documentary "Connecting Rainforests,Communities and Livelihoods" featuring the story of Dilmah's Endane Biodiversity Corridor made its debut at a wonderful launch event attended by conservationists, media, and the public.

The positive response reminds us why stories like this matter — to reconnect people with the nature that sustains us.
