The Off-road Feeding page is all about these helpless animals being fed for over 15 years by Nihal de Silva who has dedicated his life to give them a meal every single day. It all began a little over 15 years when Nihal came across a poor dog in a drain trying very hard to get out. He didn't think twice to stop and help the dog. Then he noticed a few more street dogs in almost dying conditions bec
ause of undernourishment and he started to cook food for them few numbers. But soon along the road as he drove by his heart was breaking to see the number of starving dogs increase. So whenever he saw one he would feed them food which had already prepared and kept behind his vehicle. He began to notice that dogs kept coming and they started to get very attached to him with their tails wagging and lot of love shown in their faces. To them Nihal was their only help...
One day Nihal came to the conclusion in his heart that he was not gonna continue working anymore. But he is going to commit himself to feeding these dogs everyday because he saw the difference of a fed dog and how their sadness was fading off whenever they saw him approaching with the food. It brought so much of peace in his heart that he was able to do this for them. Nihal didn't realize that he was spending all that he had for these dogs. The more the numbers, more food was cooked. Medicine was bought. He would treat them whenever they looked sick. Over the years Nihal began to struggle financially to keep feeding these dogs. Soon he was noticed by some animal lovers who themselves were doing their best to care for the needy street dogs in Sri Lanka. With their help with funds, it seemed possible to keep doing it. But Nihal's mind was very set on his commitment to these poor souls that no matter what happens he will not quit. For the past 15 years Nihal has no had a single day off. He has been here all these years doing the same thing every single day. It is difficult to believe how a person can be so committed to such a cause but he has done it. Three years ago Nihal was approached by Adopt a dog in Sri Lanka ( non-profit animal organization operating on FB) and willing to help Nihal with his Feeding Program by raising funds online because Nihal had no income anyomore and was always running low on funds. All what he saved had been used for the dogs food and medical treatments. By the end of 2013 it seemed though that donations were not coming in for the Feeding that much and the the animal welfare group itself was finding it hard to raise funds as they too had rescues to handle. So Nihal was not sure whether he had hit the bottom or not with stress levels rising due to lack of funds. So after much thought Nihal finally decided that he needed to have a page on Facebook! We started The Off-Road Feeding Program Page in July 2014. The Offroad page isnt supported by any welfare organisation anymore. But if anyone wishes to help in someway please do. Everyone who liked and joined the page was able to view photos of most of the dogs, cats and even ducks that were benefiting from the program. It was not only about the feeding but also to let everyone know that medical treatment + sterilizations were done for many dogs. 19 dogs with Distemper virus was treated with medications everyday mixed with specially cooked liver for them. 18 of them poor souls survived. Female dogs have been sterilized over the years. And within the last year 24 in total dogs were spayed thanx to everyone who helped with funds. However, a week ago the Off-Road Feeding Program page was suddenly shut down due to what reason we do not know but we are aware who reported the page. But we do not understand why you would have done that to Nihal who has never taken a single day off but only given his whole time to prepare food and feed the dogs. By doing such a thing, you have hurt the dogs mostly. They are depending on the food everyday. These dogs don't get any other meal other than this. Everyday they wait hoping for another meal to fill their hungry stomachs. so please be understanding and considerate with your comments and thinking toward this worthy cause. This page is only to help Nihal help our street friends. The only ones benefiting from this are the street dogs. It takes over three hrs to cook. He also has 7 rescued dogs at his home. With limited time he doesn't get any proper rest. by 10AM the food is ready to be loaded into his battered truck which has been serving its purpose for the past 15yrs. By 11.30- 11.45 AM he is ready to move out on to the road. Each feeding point takes time. By the time Nihal finishes his work it is way past 8.30pm. Then he goes home and cooks again for his 7 dogs. Nihal does not get anytime to have his lunch. His lunch is eaten only after he goes home and attends to his home work and dog's work. Even though it is very tiring and strenuous, he does it out of sheer love for the animals. To our page followers, we are very sorry about the sudden crashing of our page. We apologize on behalf of those who were responsible for it and wanted the page closed because they did not know why they were doing it. But we will continue to upload photos and video and share news about the sweet dogs on this page that get fed because of your kind donations and contributions.
