Successful Progress in the Groundnut Harvesting Journey of 40 Selected Farmers in Mannar District!

With the aim of promoting the economic empowerment of 40 selected farmers in Mannar District, MSEDO provided them with the agricultural resources required for groundnut production, including groundnut seeds.

Three months after the distribution of the seeds, direct field visits were conducted to observe the agricultural production lands of the beneficiary farmers. During these visits, the following observations were made:

• The groundnut crops of many farmers were growing well and were observed to be at a stage ready for harvesting.

• The farmers are effectively applying in practice the training they received on crop protection and crop maintenance.

• There is potential to obtain good yields through proper crop maintenance and improved agricultural practices.

• The farmers are actively and responsibly engaged in their production activities.

• The field visits confirmed that the seeds and agricultural resources provided have been effective in improving the farmers’ production capacity.

Agricultural Production – A Key Pathway to Economic Empowerment!

Through this initiative, opportunities are being created not only to increase the farmers’ production capacity but also to improve their family incomes and build sustainable livelihoods.

Let Us Protect Traditional Water Resources – Let Us Protect the Future!

We directly visited and observed the water resources exhibition being organized in the Nallur area of Jaffna by young people, university students, and community activists working together.

The tanks, lakes, ponds, traditional wells, groundwater resources, and other natural water bodies that our ancestors have used for generations are not merely places from which water is obtained. They are important components of our way of life, agriculture, environment, and culture.

As a result of failing to properly protect and maintain such traditional water resources, we are now facing the consequences in various forms. Challenges such as declining groundwater levels, water pollution, seawater intrusion, impacts on agriculture, shortages of drinking water, and disruption of environmental balance are increasing day by day.

If we fail to protect our water resources today, future generations will be placed in a situation where they have to face even more severe water scarcity and environmental challenges.

In this context, it is commendable that young people and university students, together with community activists, are organizing this exhibition to raise public awareness about the importance of our traditional water resources.

We directly visited the exhibition to learn about the traditional water sources and water bodies displayed there, to further understand the importance of protecting them, and to engage in a useful exchange of information.

Water is not merely a resource; it is the foundation of life.

யாழ்ப்பாணம் நல்லூர் பகுதியில் இளையோர்கள், பல்கலைக்கழக மாணவர்கள் மற்றும் சமூக ஆர்வலர்கள் இணைந்து முன்னெடுத்துவரும் நீர்வளக் கண்காட்சியை நாம் நேரடியாகச் சென்று பார்வையிட்டோம்.

எமது முன்னோர்கள் தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாகப் பயன்படுத்தி வந்த குளங்கள், ஏரிகள், குட்டைகள், பாரம்பரிய கிணறுகள், நிலத்தடி நீர் வளங்கள் மற்றும் ஏனைய இயற்கை நீர்நிலைகள் வெறுமனே நீரைப் பெறுவதற்கான இடங்கள் அல்ல. அவை எமது வாழ்வியல், விவசாயம், சுற்றுச்சூழல் மற்றும் பண்பாட்டின் முக்கியமான அங்கங்களாகும்.

இத்தகைய பாரம்பரிய நீர்வளங்களை முறையாகப் பாதுகாக்கவும், பராமரிக்கவும் தவறியதன் விளைவுகளை இன்று நாம் பல்வேறு வடிவங்களில் எதிர்கொள்கின்றோம். நிலத்தடி நீர் குறைதல், நீர் மாசுபாடு, உவர்நீர் ஊடுருவல், விவசாய பாதிப்புகள், குடிநீர் பற்றாக்குறை மற்றும் சுற்றுச்சூழல் சமநிலை பாதிப்பு போன்ற சவால்கள் நாளுக்கு நாள் அதிகரித்து வருகின்றன.

இன்றைய நீர்வளங்களை பாதுகாப்பதில் நாம் தவறினால், எதிர்கால சந்ததியினர் இன்னும் தீவிரமான நீர்ப்பற்றாக்குறை மற்றும் சுற்றுச்சூழல் சவால்களை எதிர்கொள்ள வேண்டிய நிலை ஏற்படும்.

இந்த நிலையில், இளையோர்கள் மற்றும் பல்கலைக்கழக மாணவர்கள் சமூக ஆர்வலர்களுடன் இணைந்து, எமது பாரம்பரிய நீர்வளங்களின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை மக்களுக்கு எடுத்துரைக்கும் வகையில் இக்கண்காட்சியை முன்னெடுப்பது பாராட்டுக்குரிய முயற்சியாகும்.

கண்காட்சியில் காட்சிப்படுத்தப்பட்டிருந்த பாரம்பரிய நீராதாரங்கள் மற்றும் நீர்நிலைகள் தொடர்பான தகவல்களை அறிந்துகொள்வதற்கும், அவற்றைப் பாதுகாப்பதன் அவசியத்தை மேலும் புரிந்துகொள்வதற்கும் நாம் நேரடியாகச் சென்று பார்வையிட்டு, பயனுள்ள தகவல் பரிமாற்றத்திலும் ஈடுபட்டோம்.

Presenting the Voice of the Land‑Lost People Directly to the Prime Minister
Jaffna – 22/08/2026

Today, at the Jaffna District Secretariat, we met directly with the Honourable Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, following his participation in an event held at the Jaffna Kachcheri to distribute educational financial assistance to differently‑abled university students.

On behalf of the people of the Northern and Eastern Provinces who have lost their ancestral lands and who have been struggling for many years to reclaim them, we met the Prime Minister at the Jaffna District Secretariat after the event concluded.

We conveyed to the Prime Minister the just demands, longstanding struggles, and the deep concerns of the people of Jaffna – Valikamam North, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu – Keppapilavu, Batticaloa – Mayilathamadu–Mathavanai, Mannar, and other regions in the North and East who have been fighting for their land rights for decades. We also highlighted the issues they continue to face and the prolonged land appropriation that remains unresolved.

During the periods of previous governments, no proper solutions were provided to address land‑related issues. People were subjected to continuous delays and neglect. As a result, even today, thousands of people are still fighting to reclaim their ancestral lands.

The people placed trust and hope in the new government. However, even after one and a half years, the absence of a complete and just solution to land rights issues has caused deep disappointment. Taking into account the expectations of the people and their long‑standing struggle, we strongly urged the Prime Minister to provide them with a fair and sustainable solution.

Furthermore, we handed over to the Prime Minister a petition prepared to reflect the demands and prolonged struggle of the land‑lost communities.

The Prime Minister received our petition and assured us that he would pay due attention to the matters highlighted in it.

We will continue to take the voices of the land‑lost people of the North and East to the relevant authorities, and we will continue to support their struggle until they receive a fair and permanent solution.

The Official Visit of the High Commissioner for Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives, Isabelle Martin, to Jaffna

Jaffna | 19 August 2026

As part of High Commissioner Isabelle Martin’s official visit to Jaffna, a meeting and discussion were held with civil society representatives at a private residence in Jaffna.

During this meeting, views were exchanged on the social, political, and economic conditions of the Northern Province. Key issues such as people’s livelihoods, post‑migration economic recovery, sustainable development, social justice, human rights, and good governance were discussed.

Furthermore, civil society representatives shared their field experiences and the needs of the people regarding land rights, livelihood security, youth and women’s participation, social cohesion, reconciliation, human rights, and democratic engagement.

The High Commissioner listened attentively to the perspectives of civil society and emphasized the importance of continued dialogue, communication, and cooperation.

This meeting served as an important opportunity to strengthen understanding between the international community and local civil society, enabling constructive discussions on human rights, democracy, social justice, reconciliation, and sustainable development.

Dialogue and cooperation that value the voices of the people are essential foundations for lasting peace and long‑term development.

A peaceful Democratic awareness protest was held in Kilinochchi, organized by The Voice of the Land‑Lost People.

In solidarity with the long-standing and just struggle of the people who have been fighting to reclaim their ancestral lands and housing rights, a silent protest was organized today in front of the old District Secretariat in Kilinochchi under the banner of The Voice of the Land‑Lost People.

Support was extended through this event to the demands of the people of Jaffna – Valikamam North, the people of Mullaitivu – Keppapulavu, the people of Batticaloa – Mayilathamadu–Mathavanai, the people of Kilinochchi – Poonakari region, and others from various areas who have been fighting for many years for their land and housing rights.

Land is not merely a physical space; it is intertwined with people’s livelihoods, history, culture, memories, and generational rights. Therefore, the primary demand of this silent protest is that a just and long‑overdue solution must be provided to the rightful claims of the land‑lost people.

Civil society members, human rights activists, social advocates, and representatives of various political parties participated in the event, strengthening the voices of the people fighting for land rights, beyond ethnic, religious, and political differences.

We will continue to express our support so that the just struggle of the land‑lost people succeeds, their ancestral lands are rightfully returned, and a stable and just solution is ensured.

It is noteworthy that this peaceful protest was carried out with the support of the Mannar Social and Economic Development Organization (MSEDO).

With the People of Batticaloa Mayilathamadu–Mathavanai

We visited the protest site of the Batticaloa Mayilathamadu–Mathavanai community, who have been engaged in a long and just struggle to reclaim their ancestral lands, and met with them directly to express our support. As civil society, we fully understand the legitimacy of their demands, and we emphasized that the Government of Sri Lanka must pay due attention and provide a sustainable and just solution.

As civil society, we stand with them in their struggle for justice.
