Rotary Club of Kelaniya Empowers SMEs through International Trade Development Program

24th January 2026

The Rotary Club of Kelaniya organized an SME Development Program on International Trade titled “Trade Horizons – Empowering Businesses for Global Success” on 24th January 2026 at the Faculty of Computing and Technology, University of Kelaniya. The half-day program was conducted in line with the Rotary District initiative to strengthen the SME sector through capacity building and international trade development.

The program attracted over 40 participants, including entrepreneurs currently engaged in international trade and those aspiring to enter export and import markets.

The sessions were led by a panel of experienced resource persons.
Mr. Harsha Sirimanne, Attorney-at-Law and senior professional in International Trade and Supply Chain Management, shared practical insights on import–export procedures, trade documentation, contracts, logistics, and supply chain strategies.

Mr. MFM Rizwan, Assistant Director of Agriculture and Head of the Plant Quarantine Operation Division at the National Plant Quarantine Service (NPQS), explained quarantine procedures and phytosanitary requirements applicable to exports from Sri Lanka.

Mr. Chamath Hewage, Assistant Manager – Development Credit Department of Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC, briefed participants on trade finance facilities, banking solutions, and refinance schemes available for SMEs.

Dr. Rohantha Athukorala, Chairman of the Rotary International District Project (RID 3220), attended representing the District and shared valuable perspectives on SME development and the role of international trade in sustainable economic growth.

With strong participation from members of the Rotary Club of Kelaniya, the program concluded with an interactive discussion and networking session, followed by lunch, reaffirming the club’s commitment to empowering SMEs and contributing to Sri Lanka’s economic progress. This initiative forms part of a continuous program by the Rotary Club of Kelaniya, aimed at further developing selected SMEs and supporting them to reach the next level by successfully crossing international trade borders.
