In a historic step for animal protection, Belgium has updated its constitution to formally recognize animals as sentient beings who feel pain, fear, joy, and love. For decades, animals were treated as legal “objects,” despite overwhelming scientific proof of their emotional lives.
Now, animal welfare is written into the nation’s highest law making protection a responsibility, not an option. This shift paves the way for stronger safeguards and closes loopholes that once allowed cruelty to go unnoticed.
It’s a powerful reminder that progress happens when the law finally reflects what compassion has always known: animals are not things they are living beings who deserve respect and care.
