It is a government approved charity functioning in the Central Province of Sri Lanka to help the resettlement of the paraplegics. NIPS was formed in1988 at Kurunegala by a group of concerned doctors headed by Dr. Lucien Weliwita Gunaratne together with some philanthropists. In 1992 it was moved to Kandy. NIPS is a National volunteer organization and a Government approved charity to help those who
are paralyzed from spinal cord injuries. Patients who undergo treatments in the Kandy National hospital and teaching hospitals of Peradeniya are transferred to Digana Rehabilitation center for further treatments. Upon discharge, in the resettlement process, some patients undergo various difficulties. NIPS assists such patients financially and in other ways to cope with their difficulties and intends to make their lives less burdensome. Our mission is to do every thing possible to improve the quality of life of paraplegic patients so that they can lead an independent life as possible, which includes home employment projects. We also try to support their families.
