My Experience of the Facilitation Skills Programme - By Sathusana Selvaraj

The most valuable thing I learned was that facilitation is not just about guiding a session, but about truly listening, understanding people, and creating a space where everyone feels valued and included. The practical activities helped me understand how small techniques can make a big difference in bringing people together.

This programme helped me become more confident in communicating with others and managing different situations. It also helped me reflect on myself as a facilitator and taught me the importance of empathy, patience, and creating positive connections with people. These skills will support me both personally and professionally.

In one sentence: this was a meaningful and transformative learning journey that helped me grow as a confident and thoughtful facilitator.

My favourite activity was the online facilitation session that I conducted myself. It was challenging at first, but overcoming those challenges helped me learn a lot about planning, engaging participants, and adapting as a facilitator.

I would highly recommend this programme because it provides practical learning experiences and helps you build confidence, communication skills, and a deeper understanding of facilitation.

Three words for it: Creative, Meaningful, Confidence-building.

Thank you to the entire InSpec team for creating such a meaningful learning space. I truly appreciate the guidance, support, and knowledge shared throughout the programme, and I look forward to staying connected and applying what I have learned.

My Experience of the Facilitation Skills Programme - By Arani Balraj

The most valuable thing I learned through this programme was the skill of simplifying complex ideas for young people and delivering them in an engaging way. When facilitating sessions on topics like time management and goal-setting for 16-20-year-olds, I realised how much more effective it is to connect the topic to their everyday life experiences and run the session through questions, answers, and interactive methods, rather than simply delivering information. Taking on the responsibility of planning, leading, and completing a session on my own, without organisational support, gave me great confidence.

This programme has had a significant impact on my personal and professional growth. In situations where I previously had to present unfamiliar topics, I learned to move past my hesitation and lead a group with confidence. Professionally, I've grown in my ability to connect the communication and social work theories I studied in my BSW course with real, practical facilitation sessions. This has built a solid foundation for me to take on community facilitation and project management work in the future as a social worker.

In one sentence: this programme taught me the difference between simply explaining a topic and truly engaging the participants in the room.

My favourite session was on group dynamics and how to handle a group. I learned, through practical examples, how to step in as a facilitator to maintain balance when a discussion goes off track, or when one person speaks too much.

Being willing to try matters more than being ready; that is what's important for succeeding in this programme. It's a place where every mistake becomes a learning moment.

Before joining this programme, leading a group was something that frightened me. But the experience of planning, facilitating, and reflecting on each session gradually turned that fear into confidence. Today, I have the ability to stand in front of any group and lead without hesitation. I am very grateful for this journey.

Three words for it: Challenging, Growth-oriented, Authentic.

I would like InSpec to know how much my confidence has changed since before I joined this programme. It wasn't just skills training; it also allowed me to grow as a person.

இளைஞர்களின் முகத்தில் தெரியும் புன்னகைக்கும், அவர்களின் கனவுகளுக்கும் பின்னால் பல கதைகள் இருக்கின்றன. அந்தக் கதைகளைக் கேட்பதும், புரிந்துகொள்வதும் எங்களின் பொறுப்பு.

வேலையின்மை, கல்வி மற்றும் திறன் வாய்ப்புகளின் குறைபாடு, மன அழுத்தம், தனிமை, போதைப்பொருள் பாவனை, பாகுபாடு, இணையவழி ஆபத்துகள், காலநிலை மாற்றம், மோதல்கள் மற்றும் பாதுகாப்பான இடங்களின் பற்றாக்குறை போன்ற பல சவால்களை இளைஞர்கள் தினமும் எதிர்கொள்கிறார்கள்.

ஆனால் இளைஞர்களை “திருத்த வேண்டியவர்கள்” என்று நாம் பார்க்கக்கூடாது.

அவர்களுக்கு தேவைப்படுவது செவிமடுக்கப்படும் வாய்ப்பு, ஆதரவு, சமத்துவமான இடம் மற்றும் தலைமைத்துவத்திற்கான வாய்ப்புகள்.

ஒவ்வொரு இளைஞரின் குரலும் முக்கியமானது.
ஒவ்வொரு இளைஞரும் மரியாதையுடன் கனவு காணவும், வளரவும், முன்னேறவும் ஒரு வாய்ப்புக்கு தகுதியானவர்.

கேட்போம். | ஆதரிப்போம். | உள்ளடக்குவோம். | வலுப்படுத்துவோம்.

இளைஞர்கள் வெறும் “எதிர்காலம்” அல்லர். அவர்கள் இன்றைய சமூகத்தின் முக்கியமான குரல்களும் மாற்றத்தை உருவாக்கும் சக்திகளுமாவர். 💙

Let’s look beyond the smiles, dreams and energy of young people and recognise the challenges many of them face every day.

Unemployment, mental health struggles, education and skills gaps, substance abuse, discrimination, online risks, climate change, conflict and the lack of safe spaces can deeply affect young people’s lives and their hopes for the future.

But young people do not need to be “fixed”. They need to be heard, supported, included and given opportunities to lead.

Every young voice matters. Every young person deserves a chance to dream, grow and thrive with dignity.

Let’s listen. Support. Include. Empower.

Together, we can create communities where young people are not only seen as the future, but are valued as leaders and changemakers today.

From a bus stop to a beacon of hope 🖐️💛

A few moments from our Vaddakandal bus stop initiative 🖐️💛 What was once a space linked to drug abuse, smoking, and alcohol use among young people is now a wall of handprints and hope, painted by the very community that decided to reclaim it, children, youth, and neighbours standing together for a safer future.

Transforming a Bus Stop into a Space for Awareness and Positive Change | Vaddakandal

As part of a community needs assessment conducted in Vaddakandal, community members identified concerns regarding the increasing vulnerability of young people to harmful behaviours, including drug abuse, smoking, and alcohol use. They highlighted that some young people who discontinue their education after completing O/L or A/L examinations often gather at the local bus stop, which had gradually become a space associated with these negative activities.

Understanding the importance of creating a safer and more positive environment, we decided to transform the bus stop into a space that promotes awareness and community responsibility. Under the coordination of Uthayapalan Mathanky, this initiative was started with the support and active participation of community members, the local school, and children from the area.

Children, including some young people who had dropped out of school, came together to contribute their time, creativity, and effort to bring a positive change to the space. Through their small hands and collective action, they helped redesign the bus stop with messages promoting awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse, smoking, and alcohol use.

This community-driven initiative demonstrates the power of participation, where even small contributions from children and community members can create meaningful social change and inspire a healthier, safer environment for everyone.

விழிப்புணர்வுக்கான ஒரு புதிய இடமாக மாறிய வட்டக்கண்டல் பேருந்து தரிப்பிடம்

வட்டக்கண்டல் பகுதியில் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட சமூகத் தேவைகள் மதிப்பீட்டின் போது, போதைப்பொருள் பாவனை, புகைப்பிடித்தல் மற்றும் மதுபானப் பாவனை போன்ற தீய பழக்கங்களால் இளைஞர்கள் எதிர்கொள்ளும் சவால்கள் தொடர்பாக சமூக மக்கள் தங்களுடைய கவலைகளை பகிர்ந்துகொண்டனர்.

குறிப்பாக, O/L அல்லது A/L பரீட்சைகளை முடித்த பின்னர் சில இளைஞர்கள் மேலதிக கல்வியை தொடராமல் இடைநிறுத்துகின்றனர் என்றும், அவர்கள் ஒன்றுகூடும் இடமாக உள்ளூர் பேருந்து தரிப்பிடம் மாறியுள்ளது என்றும் சமூக மக்கள் தெரிவித்தனர். அந்த இடம் சில சந்தர்ப்பங்களில் மதுபானம், புகைப்பிடித்தல் மற்றும் போதைப்பொருள் பாவனை போன்ற தீய செயல்களுடன் தொடர்புபட்ட இடமாக மாறி வருவதாகவும் அவர்கள் சுட்டிக்காட்டினர்.

இந்த நிலைமையை மாற்றி, அந்த இடத்தை இளைஞர்கள் மற்றும் சமூகத்திற்கான ஒரு நல்ல செய்தியை வழங்கும் விழிப்புணர்வு மிக்க இடமாக மாற்றுவதற்கான முயற்சி ஆரம்பிக்கப்பட்டது. உதயபாலன் மாதங்கியின் ஒருங்கிணைப்பின் கீழ், சமூக மக்களின் மற்றும் பாடசாலையின் ஆதரவுடன் இந்த மாற்றப் பயணம் தொடங்கப்பட்டது.

சமூகத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சிறுவர்கள், மேலும் கல்வியை இடைநிறுத்திய சில பிள்ளைகளும் இந்த முயற்சியில் இணைந்து தங்களுடைய சிறிய கைகளால் பேருந்து தரிப்பிடத்தை மாற்றும் பணியில் பங்கேற்றனர். அவர்களின் படைப்பாற்றல், ஒத்துழைப்பு மற்றும் ஆர்வத்தின் மூலம், போதைப்பொருள் பாவனை, புகைப்பிடித்தல் மற்றும் மதுபானப் பாவனையின் தீமைகள் குறித்து மக்களுக்கு விழிப்புணர்வு ஏற்படுத்தும் ஒரு புதிய இடமாக அந்த பேருந்து தரிப்பிடம் மாற்றப்பட்டது.
