Under the initiative of the Jaffna Healthy City project and Save a Life, a comprehensive introductory session on the implementation of the Zero Plastic Initiative was conducted at the Professorial Unit of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ward No. 21, Teaching Hospital Jaffna, on January 17, 2025. The session was graced by the presence of Dr. P. A. D. Coonghe, Head of the Department of Community and Family Medicine, University of Jaffna, who provided an insightful overview of the Healthy City project. Dr. Sathiyamoorthy, Director of Teaching Hospital Jaffna, and Dr. Gurubaran, Honorary Consultant, also delivered addresses highlighting the importance of sustainable practices within healthcare settings.

During the session, key action points were discussed, including the placement of educational materials in the ward to raise awareness about plastic reduction, encouraging the use of alternatives to single-use plastics, and replacing visible plastic items with sustainable options. This initiative marks a significant step toward fostering a healthier, more sustainable environment within healthcare facilities in Jaffna, demonstrating a collaborative commitment to a zero-plastic future.

The 44th batch of medical students from Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna has initiated the establishment of a visionary committee to enhance public health and social welfare in the Jaffna MOH region. This committee will comprise distinguished officials from various key institutions, including the District Secretariat, Sri Lanka Transport Board, Provincial Education Department, Divisional Secretariat, Railway Station, and the Private Bus Service. An Injury Prevention Awareness Workshop was conducted on the 25th of September 2024 by the 44th batch of Medical students of Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna for students from St. John’s College, St. Patrick’s College, and Central College. The workshop aimed to raise awareness about the common types of injuries that can occur during school sports activities and to equip students with practical knowledge on how to prevent them. By addressing key aspects such as proper warm-up routines, safe playing techniques, and the importance of using protective gear, the session sought to minimize the risks of injury during physical activities. The medical students also provided guidance on first-aid measures to be taken in case of an injury. The initiative was part of a broader effort to promote safety and well-being among schoolchildren involved in sports.

Serious effects of iodine deficiency include a high rate of infant mortality, goitre (an enlarged thyroid gland causing a swelling in the neck), hypothyroidism (an endocrine condition that can cause a number of symptoms ranging from chronic fatigue to weight gain), delays in growth and intellectual development in children, and intellectual disability. Iodine deficiency is especially threatening for children whose body is still growing and developing. Iodised salt can reduce the risk of iodine deficiency and is also safe for infants, children and pregnant women.

A workshop on healthy canteen Implementation was conducted on 5th October 2024 for school teachers and canteen staff from schools under the Jaffna Municipal Council. This initiative was organized by Jaffna Healthy City and Department of Community and Family Medicine in collaboration with the 44th batch of medical students at the Boardroom of Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna. The primary objective of the workshop was to raise awareness about healthy and unhealthy foods, the importance of a balanced diet, and the necessary safety measures for maintaining a healthy school canteen.
