🌴 Empowering the Kithul Value Chain in Ayagama! 🌴

Today, February 14th, our team is on the ground in Ayagama continuing our mission to modernize and sustain the Kithul industry. This pilot intervention is part of a larger initiative for Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Land Management in the Wet Zone of Sri Lanka through multi-stakeholder partnerships.

As part of the GEF-7 Project, we are hosting a comprehensive training circuit for our selected technician and tapper families. Today’s sessions focus on building a stronger, more professional future for our local producers:

Morning Session (9:00 AM): Technical Training to enhance production quality.

Afternoon Session: Financial Literacy training to ensure our tappers can manage and grow their income effectively.

We extend our gratitude to Mr. D.T. Deepagoda from the Industrial Development Board (IDB) for serving as our expert resource person today.

This project is a collaborative effort involving several key partners:

- Implementation Assistant / GEF Executive Agency: Ministry of Environment.

- Responsible Partner: Ministry of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Development.

- Development Partner: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

- Responsible Parties: Janathakshan (GTE) Ltd and Biodiversity Sri Lanka.

- Funding Source: Global Environment Facility (GEF).

- Pilot Project Implementation Partner: People’s Livelihood Development Foundation (PLDF).

We are proud to support the 80 families across the Ratnapura and Kalutara districts as they transition toward a safer, more environmentally sustainable, and economically viable Kithul production system.

Stay tuned for more updates as we move toward our practical training sessions later this month! 🚀

🌿 Sri Lanka’s Sweet Heritage: Kithul Flower Tapping Earns UNESCO Recognition

✨ A historic milestone for Sri Lanka! On 11 December 2025, UNESCO officially inscribed Kithul flower tapping (Kithul Madeema/Kithul Kapeema) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

This centuries-old practice, passed down through generations, is a living tradition that combines indigenous knowledge, craftsmanship, and spirituality. From climbing towering Kithul palms (Caryota urens) to carefully binding flower stalks and extracting sap with a sacred tapping knife, the process is as much an art as it is a livelihood. The collected sap is transformed into treacle, jaggery, and syrup—treasures of Sri Lankan cuisine and culture.

🌍 Why This Recognition Matters
Global Spotlight: UNESCO’s listing celebrates Kithul tapping as a unique cultural identity of Sri Lanka.

- Safeguarding Tradition: With fewer practitioners today, this recognition calls for urgent preservation and promotion.

- Community Pride: It honors the resilience and creativity of rural communities who keep this tradition alive.

🌸 PLDF: Championing the Kithul Industry
The People’s Livelihood Development Foundation (PLDF) is proud to stand at the forefront of this achievement. With nearly two decades of expertise in community development, sustainable livelihoods, and conservation, PLDF is the only organization in Sri Lanka with extensive expertise in the Kithul sector.

🌟 PLDF’s Key Contributions
- Recognizing Kithul Technicians: In 2014, PLDF advocated renaming Kithul farmers as Kithul Technicians, elevating their status and honoring their specialized skills.

- Capacity Building: Trained over 4,000 Kithul Technicians in advanced tapping, eco-friendly practices, and value addition.

- Value Chain Development: Modernized processing facilities, improved product quality, and connected producers to local and international markets.

- Policy Influence: Advocated for Kithul’s recognition as a national heritage plant and helped establish the National Kithul Development Board.

- Industry Leadership: Formed 248 Kithul Technician Societies and initiated the Kithul Technicians Federation to strengthen collaboration.

- Advisory Services: Provides agricultural guidance via the 1920 helpline at the Gannoruwa Agrarian Research Institute.

- Certified Excellence: Manages an ISO-certified Kithul production facility in Eheliyagoda.

- Sustainability Leadership: Integrated Kithul into agroforestry and conservation strategies.

- National Recognition: Back-to-back Gold Winner of the National Industry Award in the Kithul-based production sector.

- Knowledge Sharing: Organized national conferences for Kithul tappers and earned international recognition as a key industry leader.

Through these efforts, PLDF has transformed the Kithul industry, empowering communities and ensuring that this heritage thrives for generations to come.

🍯 A Sweet Legacy for the Future
Kithul treacle is more than a sweetener—it is a symbol of Sri Lanka’s heritage, resilience, and innovation. UNESCO’s recognition is not just a global honor, but a call to action: to preserve, promote, and celebrate this tradition.

PLDF remains committed to leading this journey, ensuring that Kithul flower tapping continues to flourish as both a livelihood and a cultural treasure. 🌸🇱🇰✨

🌴 Plant Kithul. Protect Sri Lanka. 🌴

🌍 Why It Matters Sri Lanka is increasingly vulnerable to floods, landslides, and climate shocks. In recent years, extreme weather events have displaced thousands of families, damaged infrastructure, and eroded fragile hillsides. The solution is not only rebuilding — it is re-rooting our land with resilience.

🌱 PLDF’s National Movement: Escalating the Green Shield The People’s Livelihood Development Foundation (PLDF) has been at the forefront of this effort. Following the successful planting of over 200,000 Kithul (Caryota urens) palms in landslide areas across Ratnapura, Kegalle, and other vulnerable districts in previous years, we are now launching a bold new initiative.

PLDF has started a 1 Million Kithul Tree Planting Campaign focused on flood-affected landslide areas and other vulnerable slopes across 11 districts, including Ratnapura, Kegalle, and Kandy. These trees strengthen soil, protect riverbanks, and create sustainable livelihoods. The vision is clear: millions of Kithul trees across Sri Lanka, forming a green shield for our people and our future.

💡 Why Kithul?

🌳 Strong Roots: Anchor soil and significantly reduce landslides.

💧 Flood Resilience: Absorb excess water and stabilize riverbanks.

👩‍🌾 Livelihoods: Provide jaggery, treacle, flour, and toddy — empowering rural families.

🕊️ Heritage: A tree deeply woven into Sri Lanka’s culture and resilience.

🚀 Join the Movement We call on government agencies, local councils, NGOs, schools, universities, private sector leaders, and citizens to unite. Together, let’s make Kithul the green shield of Sri Lanka.

🌟 Campaign Slogans

“Plant Kithul, Protect Our Land.”

“Roots of Resilience, Fruits of Prosperity.”

“Kithul for Life, Kithul for Sri Lanka.”

“From Disaster to Sustainability — One Tree at a Time.”

Every Kithul tree planted is a promise to future generations — a promise of safety, sustainability, and prosperity. Let us rise together, hand in hand, to plant resilience across Sri Lanka.

🌴 Plant Kithul. Protect Sri Lanka. Empower Our People. Secure Our Future. 🌴

🌟🇱🇰 South Asia’s Fastest Woman: Fathima Shafiya Yamick Blazes a Trail for Sri Lanka! 🏃‍♀️🔥

In a moment that will echo through Sri Lanka’s sporting history, Fathima Shafiya Yamick has emerged as a sprinting sensation, claiming triple gold at the 4th South Asian Athletics Championship in Ranchi, India. Her performance wasn’t just fast—it was record-breaking.

🏅 100m – 11.53 seconds
🏅 200m – 23.58 seconds
🏅 4x100m Relay – 44.70 seconds
Each race ended with Shafiya rewriting the record books and raising the Sri Lankan flag high.

At just 26, this powerhouse from Viharamahadevi Girls’ College, Kandy has become a symbol of speed, strength, and Sri Lankan pride. Her stride carries more than medals—it carries the hopes of a nation, the rhythm of resilience, and the fire of future champions.

💬 “She runs like the monsoon—swift, bold, and free. A lioness leading the Sri Lankan pack.”

Let’s celebrate Shafiya not just for her wins, but for what she represents: determination, discipline, and the unstoppable spirit of Sri Lankan women. Her story is a call to action—for schools, communities, and sports federations to invest in talent, nurture dreams, and believe in the brilliance that blooms in our own backyard.

🌿 A Day of Collaboration for a Climate-Resilient Knuckles! 🌿

Yesterday, the team from Peoples Livelihood Development Foundation (PLDF) and Lanka Eco Products Pvt. Ltd. was honoured to participate in the Rapid Implementation Awareness Programme for the groundbreaking GCF Knuckles Project.

This ambitious project, implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and ICRAF, is set to strengthen the climate resilience of farmers and plantation communities in the precious Knuckles Mountain Range. We were inspired by the project's holistic vision, which masterfully connects Sustainable Land Management (SLM) with Green Value Chain (GVC) development to create lasting environmental and economic impact.

The interactive sessions provided invaluable insights into partnership opportunities, and we are incredibly excited about the potential for PLDF and Lanka Eco Products to contribute our expertise. We left feeling motivated and aligned with the project's goals, and we eagerly look forward to collaborating in shaping innovative, climate-smart solutions for our region.

A heartfelt thank you to the Project Management Unit for the invitation and for fostering such a productive dialogue. Together, we can drive meaningful change!
