World Elephant Day, celebrated every August 12, is an international event launched in 2012 to bring global attention to the urgent conservation challenges facing the world's largest land mammals. Elephants are vital ecosystem engineers that reshape landscapes, dig essential waterholes for other wildlife, disperse seeds through their dung, and maintain balanced ecosystems that naturally sequester carbon.

The family Elephantidae consists of three distinct living species across two continents. The African Savanna Elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest living land animal, recognizable by large ears shaped like the African continent and prominent tusks present in both sexes. Inhabiting dense tropical jungles, the smaller African Forest Elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) features straighter, downward-pointing tusks suited for thick foliage. Meanwhile, the Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus) features smaller ears and a rounded back, encompassing four distinct subspecies: the Sri Lankan, Indian, Sumatran, and Borneo Pygmy elephant.

Scientifically, elephants are among the most complex creatures on Earth. Their trunks alone contain over 40,000 individual muscles, allowing for both delicate precision and tremendous power. They operate within tightly knit matriarchal societies, guided by experienced females with exceptional spatial memories. To coordinate over vast distances, they rely on low-frequency infrasonic calls and send seismic vibrations through the ground, which other elephants detect using sensitive nerve endings in their feet.

Despite their intelligence and ecological importance, elephants continue to suffer from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal poaching for the ivory trade. World Elephant Day serves as a vital call to action for international cooperation, habitat preservation, and sustainable conservation efforts to ensure these iconic giants endure for generations to come.

Every year on July 29, World Tiger Day serves as a vital reminder to safeguard one of Earth's most iconic apex predators. Sitting at the top of the food chain, tigers (Panthera tigris) are essential to maintaining healthy ecosystems, regulating prey populations, and protecting the rich biodiversity of Asia’s forest landscapes.
Despite their legendary status, wild tiger populations have faced severe declines due to habitat loss, climate change, human-wildlife conflict, and relentless illegal poaching. Today, wild tigers survive across two primary recognized subspecies: Continental Tigers (Panthera tigris tigris), which include the well-known Bengal, Amur (Siberian), Indochinese, and Malayan populations, and the smaller, critically endangered Sundaland Tigers (Panthera tigris sondaica), represented today by the Sumatran tiger.

Dedicated global conservation efforts, protected wildlife corridors, and community-led initiatives are slowly helping wild tiger numbers recover. However, protecting these big cats requires continuous, vigilant action. World Tiger Day urges us to recognize that safeguarding tigers is about far more than preserving a single species, it is about securing wild forests, preserving natural balance, and ensuring a healthy planet for future generations.

Every year on July 26, the world observes the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. This day highlights the indispensable role these coastal forests play in stabilizing our climate and protecting shorelines.
Mangroves are ecological powerhouses. Scientifically renowned for sequestering "blue carbon," they capture atmospheric carbon dioxide in their soils at rates significantly higher than terrestrial forests. Their dense, interwoven roots stabilize shorelines against erosion while absorbing wave energy from severe storm surges.
This conservation mission hits especially close to home in Sri Lanka. Recognizing the protective barrier mangroves provided during the 2004 tsunami, Sri Lanka made history in 2015 as the first nation to legally protect all its remaining mangrove forests. Honored as a UN World Restoration Flagship, the country currently leads global efforts in science-backed ecosystem regeneration.
Protecting these coastal guardians is essential for biodiversity, local livelihoods, and global climate resilience. By conserving our mangroves today, we secure a safer future for tomorrow.

Under the Stars, Above the Clouds: A Law College Adventure
The first-ever two-day trip organized for the students of Sri Lanka Law College on the 3rd and 4th of June was far more than a simple excursion. It was an extraordinary adventure that challenged us, inspired us, and brought us closer together in ways that could never have been achieved within the walls of a classroom.
Our destination was the sacred and iconic Adam's Peak, a mountain that holds great cultural, religious, and environmental significance in Sri Lanka. What made this journey even more special was that we undertook the climb during the off-season, when the mountain is quieter, with no crowd at all, and closer to its natural state. This allowed us to experience the beauty and serenity of the surroundings uniquely and unforgettably.
The adventure began in the middle of the night. As we started our ascent under a sky illuminated by countless stars, there was a sense of excitement and anticipation that words can hardly describe. The cool mountain air, the darkness of the trail, and the determination shared by every participant created an atmosphere filled with adventure and purpose. With each step, we moved further away from our comfort zones and closer to an experience that would remain with us for years to come.
Beyond the climb itself, this journey carried a meaningful environmental purpose. As part of the "Haritha Siripa" initiative, we actively participated in a cleaning project along the route, contributing to the preservation of one of Sri Lanka's most treasured natural and spiritual landmarks. It was a reminder that enjoying nature comes with the responsibility of protecting it for future generations. Through this effort, we learned that true appreciation for the environment is demonstrated not merely through admiration, but through action.
The journey was undoubtedly challenging. There were moments when it tested us physically and mentally. Yet, those very challenges became the most rewarding part of the adventure. Every difficult step made reaching the summit even more meaningful. Standing above the clouds as dawn broke across the horizon, surrounded by breathtaking views, we felt a profound sense of accomplishment. It was a moment that reminded us of our resilience, determination, and ability to overcome obstacles.
However, this trip was about much more than reaching a destination. It was about the people who shared the journey. Over the course of two days, we had the opportunity to connect with one another on a deeper level, sharing stories, laughter, encouragement, and countless memorable moments. We learned from each other's experiences and perspectives, creating friendships and bonds that will undoubtedly last long beyond our time at Law College.
Many exciting plans in life remain merely ideas, but only a few become reality. This adventure was one of those rare experiences that truly happened, and for that, we are incredibly grateful. A special word of thanks goes to the organizing team, whose dedication, vision, and hard work made this remarkable journey possible. Their efforts transformed Law College from simply an institution of learning into a community that feels like a second home.
As we look back on these two unforgettable days, we carry with us not only memories of mountains, stars, clouds, and sunrise views, but also lessons in perseverance, environmental responsibility, friendship, and gratitude. The first-ever Law College two-day trip was more than an adventure—it was an experience that reminded us that some of life's most meaningful moments begin when we dare to take the first step into the unknown.
As we descended from Adam's Peak, we returned not only with photographs and memories, but with a renewed appreciation for nature, a stronger sense of community, and the satisfaction of having left the mountain a little cleaner than we found it.

A heartfelt thank you to the Honourable Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya, PC, President of the Court of Appeal, for graciously welcoming our delegation to His Lordship’s chambers and generously sharing his invaluable knowledge, experience, and judicial insights.

His Lordship’s discussion on writ jurisdiction, particularly in the context of environmental law, provided participants with a deeper understanding of the judiciary’s vital role in environmental protection, administrative law, and the pursuit of justice. The thoughtful exchange offered a rare opportunity to appreciate the practical application of legal principles beyond the classroom.

Engaging with distinguished members of the judiciary remains a cornerstone of our mission to bridge the gap between academic learning and the realities of legal practice. We are sincerely grateful to His Lordship for his time, wisdom, and encouragement, which made this visit an inspiring and memorable experience. We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to Mr. Ahamed Ilham, AAL for his invaluable support in coordinating this engagement and making the session possible.

Stay tuned as we continue our journey through the next phases of EcoNexus.

Today is World Zoonoses Day, a crucial time to reflect on the invisible threads connecting human health to the animal kingdom. Observed every July 6, this day commemorates the historic moment in 1885 when Louis Pasteur successfully administered the first vaccine against rabies,a deadly zoonotic disease.
Zoonoses are illnesses that spread naturally between vertebrate animals and humans. The scale of this connection is staggering: scientists estimate that more than 60% of known infectious diseases in people can be spread from animals, and 75% of new or emerging infectious diseases originate in wildlife or livestock. From common illnesses like salmonella to global health challenges like avian influenza and Ebola, the boundary between species is highly porous.
Preventing future outbreaks requires a shift toward a "One Health" approach, an understanding that human, animal, and environmental health are fundamentally interdependent. By curbing deforestation, managing wildlife trade responsibly, and ensuring routine pet vaccinations, we protect more than just ecosystems; we safeguard ourselves.
Healthy Animals, Healthy Humans, a Shared Future. 🐾🌎
