EvalYouth Sri Lanka organized an online panel discussion titled “From Demand to Decline: How U.S. Development Aid Cuts Threaten the Evaluation Profession”, to explore the impact of recent U.S. Government decisions to reduce development funding on evaluation careers in Sri Lanka, on June 4, 2025.

As development projects scale down, the demand for Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) professionals is rapidly declining, posing serious challenges to youth and early-career evaluators. This session brought together local and international young professionals who shared insights, experiences, and strategies for sustaining the evaluation profession amid changing donor priorities.

EvalYouth Sri Lanka with the generous support through the Seed Grant by Asia Pacific Evaluation Association (APEA) and EvalIndigenous, that aimed to strengthen locally driven and culturally responsive evaluation practices in Asia-Pacific Region, implemented an initiative aimed at capturing and integrating Indigenous knowledge from the Batticaloa district in Sri Lanka's Eastern Province. This study was conducted from 1 September 2024 to 30 April 2025 to examine how indigenous cultural values can be integrated into transport planning.

A field-based case study, using Key Informant Interviews with community members and stakeholders, revealed critical gaps in transport services. Transport was seen not only as a necessity but a way to preserve indigenous identity. The study recommends improving service accessibility and embedding cultural elements into transport systems. It underscores the need for empathetic, community-driven planning to ensure mobility systems support both movement and cultural preservation.
