It is with much gratitude that we remember the commendable service rendered by the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society by providing corneas to save the sight of the soldiers wounded in the humanitarian mission to rescue our motherland from terrorism. We should appreciate with gratitude the service rendered by Dr. Hudson Silva, the fonder of this society for succeeding in motivating Sri Lankans to donate eyes. He, amidst various difficulties and issues, steered the society towards its progress with the co-operation of both public and private sector and his unswerving courage and enthusiasm paved the way of the Eye Donation Society to become a world renowned organization. The project Deshabandu Dr. Hudson Silva started has grown immensely as a public service irrespective of race, religion, cast and political differences. 1. 785,000 persons had bequeathed their eyes.
2. 680 Branches had completed registration. (This is same branch of the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society. To hospitals in Sri Lanka we had supplied 39,527 eyes.
4. 58,846 eyes for cornea grafting & 19,992 eyes for research has been supplied to foreign countries. Established under act 38 of 1955 and act 48 of 1987. No age limit for eye donations. Any person below 70 years of age can donate tissues within 12 hours of death.
