🌿 Inspiring Young Conservationists at Madampa Lake 🦋
Under our Citizen Science Initiative, the Nagenahiru Environmental Learning Center (NELC) successfully conducted a Butterfly Reporting and Identification Competition with school children around Madampa Lake, in collaboration with the Divisional Secretariat Office – Ambalangoda.
This initiative created a valuable platform for students to engage with nature while gaining scientific knowledge on butterfly diversity, behavior, and ecological importance. It was encouraging to see the enthusiasm and curiosity of the next generation of environmental stewards.
We were delighted to host the awarding ceremony at NELC, celebrating the efforts and achievements of these young participants.
🌱 What’s next?
As a follow-up, we aim to support and motivate the award winners to develop butterfly-friendly home gardens by introducing and nurturing host and nectar plants, contributing to habitat enhancement around Madampa Lake.
Together, we continue to build a generation that understands, values, and protects our natural ecosystems. Living Lakes Network Divisional Secretariat Ambalangoda Sri Devananda College, Ambalangoda. Prajapathi Gothami Girls College,Ambalangoda

Sustainable tourism at Madampa Lake, Ambalangoda is creating real benefits for both nature and local communities. 🌿
Through our community-based tourism experiences—such as mangrove restoration activities, lake excursions, and environmental learning programs—we are supporting local livelihoods while protecting the unique biodiversity of Madampa Lake.
This initiative ensures that tourism directly contributes to the well-being of surrounding communities and the long-term conservation of the wetland ecosystem.
We are pleased to showcase these sustainable tourism offers to the international travel market at ITB Berlin, strengthening partnerships that value responsible travel and nature conservation.

Butterfly Identification & Conservation Workshop at Madampa Lake

We recently conducted an interactive workshop for Sunday School students around Madampa Lake, focusing on butterfly identification and conservation. The session introduced students to the importance of butterflies as pollinators and bio-indicators of healthy ecosystems.
As the next step, students will begin recording butterfly species found in their home gardens. This hands-on activity encourages observation, documentation, and environmental responsibility, turning young learners into citizen scientists.
This initiative is part of our ongoing community-based conservation efforts at Madampa Lake — empowering the younger generation to actively contribute to biodiversity monitoring and protection.
Together, we are nurturing future conservation leaders.

Citizen Science in Action – Butterfly Conservation Workshop

As part of our Citizen Science initiatives, our team conducted a hands-on workshop on butterfly identification and conservation for the Scouts of Sri Devananda College.

The session introduced students to basic butterfly taxonomy, field identification techniques, species recording methods, and the ecological importance of host and nectar plants. By engaging directly in observation and documentation, students actively contribute to local biodiversity knowledge.

Through Citizen Science, we empower young people to become active participants in conservation — not just learners, but contributors to protecting our ecosystems.
