We’re a Finalist!
We are proud to announce that the Nagenahiru Environmental Learning Center (NELC) has been selected as a Finalist in the Social Entrepreneurs in Tourism Competition 2026!
Being chosen from 238 applications is a significant milestone and a wonderful recognition of our work in community-based wetland conservation and sustainable tourism at Madampa Lake, Sri Lanka.
The journey continues with an international Mentorship Programme, leading to the Final Pitch Contest this November, where two winners will be selected.
A heartfelt thank you to our local communities, partners, volunteers, and supporters who have been part of this achievement. This recognition belongs to all of you.
Together, we are proving that tourism can protect nature, empower communities, and create lasting impact. Living Lakes Network

Young Minds for Wetland Conservation!

NELC recently conducted an engaging environmental education workshop for Kids Club members, focusing on the value of wetland ecosystems and the importance of their conservation.
Through interactive learning and nature-based activities, the children explored how wetlands support biodiversity, protect water resources, and provide important benefits for people and wildlife.

By inspiring children to understand and appreciate wetlands, we are helping to nurture the next generation of young conservationists.

A Healthy Lake Ecosystem Starts with Strong Local Communities

The health and long-term protection of a lake ecosystem cannot be assured without the active support and participation of local communities.

At Nagenahiru Environmental Learning Center (NELC), we promote community-based regenerative tourism that connects ecosystem services with the restoration of traditional livelihoods and the conservation of the lake ecosystem.

By creating opportunities for local people to benefit from nature-based tourism, we aim to strengthen livelihoods, preserve traditional knowledge, and ensure that the lake and its biodiversity remain healthy for future generations. Lakes Network

Conducted in collaboration with the Forest Department of Sri Lanka, the workshop provided students with valuable knowledge and practical insights into mangrove biodiversity, ecosystem services, and conservation efforts.

By inspiring young Environmental Pioneers to understand and protect our natural ecosystems, we can build a stronger future for Sri Lanka’s environment.
