So, why abolish the death penalty?
1- It blatantly violates the dignity of human life and the universal declaration of human rights.
2- Since there is neither proof nor evidence supporting the idea that capital punishment deters crime.
3- Since it defies the Lebanese constitution by violating the second article in the Preamble which states “Lebanon is also a founding and active member of the United Nations Organization and abides by its covenants and by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Government shall embody these principles in all fields and areas without exception.”
4- Since it is an illogical action taken by the state and accepted by the general public which dictates that the state, along with the general public, kill people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong.
5- Since conviction of innocent people does occur, and death makes a miscarriage of justice unalterable.

Among its current work within the monitoring and advocacy program, ALEF is one of the three implementing partners of a regional project on death penalty (“Al Haya Haque “ / Life is a Right). Alhaya Haque is an 18 month project that aims to contribute to abolishing the death penalty in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt : Leaders, Namaa, ALEF and Andalus . Recognising the difficulties that face activism against the death penalty in these countries, the applicant and its partners view the collaborative work of five organisations in four countries to be more effective on the level awareness raising and advocacy. Among the project’s components, ALEF and partners aims at raising awareness on the inhumanity and inefficiency of the death penalty among the youth, to trigger a cultural breakthrough in the perception of this penal sentence. The death penalty is a violation to the right to life and is does not respond to the fact that punishment should serve the purpose of rehabilitation rather than ending a life. The partners view the specific objective of this action as essential in creating the desired transformation to the abolishment of the death penalty in participating countries. This media competition will be also promoted through pubs and universities and related details are mentioned in the brochure.
