CHAMPS FUND: The Hicham El Hage Program for Young Hearts & Athletes Health "Champs Fund: the Hicham El Hage Program for Young Hearts and Athletes Health" is a charitable fund at the American University of Beirut Medical Center.

The Champs Fund is established in the Department of Family Medicine at the American University of Beirut Medical Center in memory of Hicham El Hage, a 15 years old young athlete who collapsed on the Football field due to an undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The main objectives of the Fund are:
- To advocate for mandatory preparticipation examination, including cardiac screening, for all at

hletes in schools, universities and professional teams.
- To develop a cardiac screening program model for early detection of heart diseases in young atheltes.
- To raise public awareness regarding cardiac risks in young athletes and the young population in general.
- To conduct capacity building programs that will improve the skills and knowledge of professionals (health care workers, coaches & sports trainers) in prevention and early identification of cardiac risks in young athletes as well as provision of emergency support ( CPR and use of defibrillators) if needed.
- To provide support to families affected by sudden death of a young person.
- To assist socio-economically vulnerable young persons in the cost of screening, diagnostic tests for heart diseases and treatment.
- To conduct research in this field and contribute to the development of a national registry for heart diseases among young athletes.

In addition prompt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of automated external defibrillator (AED) can save lives!

On August 19, we had the first group of 21 students at the American University of Beirut (AUB) trained on saving lives through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and using Automated External Defibrillators (AED). This is part of the AUB Heartsafe Campus initiative that is a collaboration between CHAMPS Fund, University Student Faculty Committee (USFC), Office of students affairs and the Nursing Services Life Support Center at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC). More than 65 young athletes from had their hearts screened on May 4. They all had their blood pressure checked, their heart examined and had an electrocardiogram done.
