On Wednesday April 15th, the Embassy of Finland in Lebanon visited a collective shelter in Beirut, witnessing firsthand the reality of the displacement crisis and its impact on families. The visit highlighted how women, girls, and children are affected in different ways, and how persons with disabilities face some of the greatest challenges, with barriers to mobility, limited access to services, and disrupted support networks.
As the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon deepens following renewed hostilities, these challenges continue to intensify, disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable.
With support from Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Plan International Lebanon in coordination with the Ministry of Social Affairs and in partnership with LUPD, is delivering an inclusive response that prioritizes the specific needs of persons with disabilities.
Through this support, 40 assistive devices have been provided to persons with disabilities in collective shelters, helping restore mobility, independence, and safer access to essential services.
An additional 160 assistive devices have been distributed to crisis-affected individuals outside shelters, ensuring support reaches people across different displacement settings.

This response is a reminder that inclusion is not optional, it is essential to ensuring that no one is left behind in times of crisis.

Children in Lebanon are paying an unbearable price.

On 8 April, 33 children were reportedly killed and 153 injured in strikes affecting populated areas. Some children remain unaccounted for. Others have been separated from their families in the most devastating way.

Since March, more than 600 children have been killed or injured.

Children must never be part of the violence.
They must be protected, always.

09/04/2026

Right now in , civilians are being killed and injured in large-scale strikes on populated areas, often without warning and in the midst of daily life. Entire villages are being flattened, and vital infrastructure is being destroyed.

While a ceasefire has been announced elsewhere in the region, many in Lebanon had hoped it would signal a path toward peace and stability. However, that hope quickly dimmed amid an intense escalation yesterday, with over 100 airstrikes reported within minutes.

The consequences have been devastating: at least 182 people were killed overnight, whilst 890 were injured, according to the Ministry of Health. More than 1, 700 people have now been killed, including over 120 children.

Plan International Lebanon are working around the clock to provide life-saving assistance to displaced families – including food, water, cash, and essential supplies – but we need immediate protection of civilians, safe, sustained humanitarian access, and urgent funding to ramp up our response. Without this, the scale and severity of harm will continue to grow.

Update from the BTF project, in response to the recent country crisis:

With the continuous escalations in Lebanon, the “Back to the Future 6” project will continue the implementation of its activities, as providing quality, inclusive education and child protection services remain core commitments and priorities of the project.

Recognizing the challenges posed by the current situation, the project will ensure the continuity of its activities through flexible and situation responsive approaches, placing the safety of children and caregivers as the utmost priority.

Education and child protection interventions will therefore be adapted according to the conditions in different regions across Lebanon. In some areas, activities will continue through in-person attendance where it is safe and feasible, while in other locations they will be delivered through online modalities to ensure that children continue to access learning opportunities and protection support without interruption.

Safety first. Protecting children and caregivers remains our highest priority.

The “Back to the Future 6” is funded by EU Civil Protection & Humanitarian Aid and implemented by AVSI Middle East and North Africa, Terre des hommes Italy in Lebanon and Plan International Lebanon, in partnership with Nabad for Development, Sawa for Development and Aid - سوا للتنمية والإغاثة, الحركة الاجتماعية Mouvement Social Fraternity Association Beirut - جمعية الاخوة - بيروت USPEaK and Hand Organization and in collaboration with Oxygen, ملتقى الفينيق للشباب العربي, جمعية بقسطا للتنمية الإجتماعية, جمعية الوعي والمواساة الخيرية The Awareness & Consolation Association

Lebanon is facing a renewed humanitarian crisis, as escalating hostilities continue to drive displacement and deepen vulnerabilities across the country. Just as the country was beginning to recover from the 2024 war, renewed escalation is once again forcing large-scale displacement, with people seeking safety in overcrowded shelters and areas with limited access to basic services.

For children and women, the impact is particularly severe. Disrupted routines, lack of safe spaces, and restricted access to essential support are compounding existing risks and affecting their wellbeing. Humanitarian needs are rising rapidly, as communities across Lebanon continue to navigate uncertainty, loss, and repeated displacement.

Hear from Alam Janbein, Plan International Lebanon’s Director of Programmes, as she reflects on the current situation and the realities on the ground.

Lebanon is facing a renewed humanitarian crisis, with escalating hostilities forcing more than 1.2 million people from their homes. Among them are hundreds of thousands of children; living in overcrowded shelters, displaced from their routines, and exposed to growing risks.

As a child-centered organization, Plan International is working on the ground to ensure that children are protected, supported, and not left behind. From providing essential assistance to creating safer spaces, our response is focused on restoring a sense of safety and dignity for every child affected.

Because in times of crisis, protecting children is not optional. It is essential.

We remain committed to standing with children and their families, ensuring their rights, safety, and wellbeing—no matter the circumstances.

Since early March, following the escalation in Lebanon, Plan International Lebanon has rapidly scaled up its emergency response to support displaced and vulnerable communities across Beirut, Mount Lebanon, and the Bekaa.

Key activities included the distribution of hygiene and dignity kits, food parcels, and ready-to-eat meals, reaching people in both collective shelters and host communities and helping address urgent basic needs. In total, over 17,000 individuals have been supported through this response.

This timely intervention was made possible through funding from the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), enabling rapid mobilization and ensuring assistance reached those most affected during a critical time.
