Immigration and government crackdown are terrifying experiences. But the best thing to do is stay calm and be prepared. These are our recommendations for preparing for a crackdown
1. Organize and prepare your Immigration documents, make sure you have everything you need and that it is in an easy to find place in case you have to send someone to your house to get them.
2. Organize and prepare your banking information, do you know where your bank book is? Your cards? Do you know the PINs and passwords for all your accounts? Make sure you have that information ready and easy to find. We recommend putting it with your Immigration paperwork.
3. If you have a pet, prepare them to travel. Make sure their vaccinations are up to date, they're chipped, and that you have a travel safe carrier for them.
4. Prepare a rainy day fund that can cover travel expenses and/or a lawyer. If you don't need it for this crackdown you can use it later for something fun.
5. Keep a record of all conversations with your employer, in writing is best. Protect yourself by keeping a through and complete record.
6. If you have evidence that your employer lied or misled you about your visa restrictions or responsibilities, start getting it together. If you have to get into a legal fight, you want as much evidence as possible to protect you.
7. Talk to an immigration attorney. They are the experts, they're the best situated to help you if you need legal assistance.
8. Join a union to fight for employee protections. Teachers shouldn't suffer for the crimes of their employers. We want labor protections for all language teachers, and we're here to help. We can all work together for a better tomorrow.
