야생동물소모임은...
○ 야생동물과 그 터전을 소중히 생각하는 사람들의 모임
○ 약어 : 야소모(Yasomo)
○ 영문 : Korean Wildlife Conservationist Group

Yasomo (Korean Wildlife Conservationist Group)
Thirteen people, highly interested in studying and conserving wildlife in the country, had gathered on the day of March 17, 2000, and that was the kick off of the organization. had used the bulletin board at Green Korea's website to share information but because of the need to have a greater capacity to hold the increasing volume of the data and information, we had to use an separate server and set up our own website. Having no other former organizations studying wild animals to refer to, YSM members exerted ourselves for improving our expertise by holding seminars, inviting experts for lectures and conducting periodic field investigations.
< About YSM>
The first year was a year that we spent trying to find the commonness in our inclinations and our attitude, so as to lead and plan our future activities and campaigns. And we concluded that our primary mission is to recover and conserve the role and existence of wildlife in this land. We try to accomplish the mission by effective wildlife management. At the same time, we make sure that our approaches go hand in hand with respecting animal rights and protection of entire ecosystems and habitats. In that aspect, we named ourselves "Korean Wildlife Conservation Group" in English.
< What we do>
The utmost important activities that we do is sharing information between the members and field investigations. Owing to lack of easily attainable information and data on mammals in Korea, members strongly felt the need to exchange and share the individual's knowledge and hence it helped to improve each one of our expertise. We also made our efforts to conduct periodic field investigations in the areas such as Mt. Jiri, Mt. Sorak and Lake Siwha. Because of the fact that mammals, compared with other species are scarcely detected during the daytime in the country, we have conducted night-time investigations and snowdrifts investigations which made it possible for us to find the traces which are the key factors to understand more about wildlife. All this wouldn't have been possible if it were not for and Mr. Geurim Park from Mt. Sorak. We try to accomplish our goals by conducting periodic monitoring / investigation in designated areas and investigating the traces of big cats who are still believed to be existing in our land. We also conduct public education programs and put up data files and information on our website to be shared between the members and accessed by public. Mr. YoonSoo Lee, as the promoter and operator in charge of merchandise, we made profits out of the sales of animal footprint-designed handkerchiefs and T-shirts. We equipped ourselves with transmission radios, GPS, searchlights and automatic unmanned camera(self-operated camera?) for monitoring out of the sales profits . We also donate some share of our profits to other wildlife conservation campaigns that are going on, in and out of the country. We donated US$600 in October 2003 to Tigris Foundation in Russia to recover and conserve Amur Leopards. Having participated in 10USD Solidarity for Amur Leopards by sending KW200,000, we'll keep on supporting and showing close cooperations with other conservation groups in and outside the country by donations and interchanges, and therefore, pull the strength together. While taking active parts in YSM, some members got involved in wildlife-related fields of professions and met the chances to build relationships with scientists and activists. This naturally worked as a strong motivation for the other members to enthusiastically achieve the common goal. Members, being mostly in between their late 20's and mid-30's, are expected to gain greater influence in their field and our society within 5 years.
< Operations>
YSM started out without any membership fee collected, and members were to identify themselves when putting up opinions and information on the website. Anyone could be a member and of course, could freely give up membership at one's will. Once a year, all the members are to be withdrawn from YSM membership and should sign up again. In the beginning, all the information on our website was open to public and accessible to anyone interested, but due to overflowing spam mails and various problems concerning credibility of the up-posted data/information, we are now asked to log-in to post any kind of information on the website and are imposed annual membership fee. Due to the present log-in system, member-management is far more systematic, therefore, effective. The membership fee is being used for purchasing equipments for field investigations, donating other funds and executing all other activities that fits our goal. Decided in October 2003 is that we hold our general meetings once a year in February. Preliminary settlement of accounts and annual planning is to be done at the meeting. The service term of representatives has not been officially fixed but is likely to be 1 year hereafter. The Executive Committee is composed of 5, including the representative, each in charge of Management & Administrations, Educations, Field Investigations, and Website Operations.
< The Relationship with Green Korea>
Y.S.M. is one of many subsidiary groups which was founded by Ms. YooJin Lee, a staff of Green Korea. But, as our activities and campaign executions are independently carried on, based on our own decisions, our beliefs and opinions don't intactly represent those of Green Korea's. This is the most distinctive nature of Y.S.M. compared with other sub-groups of Green Korea's. But Y.S.M. will upkeep the reciprocal interchange and co-relationship with Green Korea to reach the common goal to keep and preserve the eco-system of this world.
