Giant Puppet Project, Siem Reap Cambodia’s Largest Children’s Community Arts Project

Now entering its 11th year, this significant event for underprivileged children in Siem Reap creates an important sense of community building, establishes teamwork and offers pride and commendation. Giant puppets are created by children and include unique educational, cultural or ecological themes such as road safety, endangered species, hygiene, local cultural appreciation and environmental awar

eness. Under the guidance of student artists from Phare Ponleu Seplak in Battambang, over 500 children participate in fun and creative workshops, which are designed to charge and encourage the imaginations of the children. During the course of the workshops the children’s enthusiasm grows until it bursts onto the streets of Siem Reap on the evening of the annual parade, currently scheduled for Saturday February 18th 2017. Established in 2007 with just over 200 children participating in the inaugural parade, the project had more than doubled in size. In 2016 nearly 600 children from numerous local schools, orphanages, 'street kid' centres took part alongside children from a nearby shelter for child landmine survivors.

The Giant Puppet Project are proud to be again partners with The Inland Ocean Festival/ Environment Tourism Event. Happening tomorrow (26th) in Kampong Khleang. Main Events: 3:30pm-a 1,000 bicycle formation and at 5:30-6:30pm a puppet parade consisting of a Giant Mekong Barb by Artist Riem Monisilong, accompanied by over 100 baby fish puppets. Parade leaves from the East Boat Pier and around the villages!. Thanks to our team of Puppet Artists that ran 3 days of workshops with Kids of Kamphong Khleang making the parade fishes.
