MOEI: Investing in teachers. Strengthening classrooms.

While our volunteers teach in community schools each day, we also create opportunities for local teachers to learn, collaborate and share ideas.

Each week, local teachers took part in teacher development workshops while our volunteers and students from Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia (PUCSR) continued teaching lessons, allowing students to keep learning throughout the day.

The impact of our volunteers extends beyond the classroom. By supporting lessons each week, they created the time and space for local teachers to come together, share ideas and take part in ongoing professional development.

We’re committed to continuing these workshops and supporting our partner schools throughout the year.

PUCSR × ELA: Strengthening Education Through Partnership

One of the highlights of MOEI Cambodia 2026 was continuing our partnership with the students from Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia – Siem Reap (PUCSR).

Now in its second year, the collaboration between PUCSR and volunteers from University College Dublin Volunteers Overseas began during training week through icebreakers and cross-cultural communication workshops.

They then worked side by side in four community schools across Siem Reap, co-teaching lessons, supporting classroom activities and delivering engaging learning experiences for hundreds of students.

By stepping into the classroom, the university volunteers also enabled local teachers to take part in professional development sessions delivered by the ELA team. We’ll be sharing more about that in a future post.

At the heart of this partnership is the belief that learning goes both ways. Cambodian and Irish university students worked side by side, sharing ideas, learning from one another and supporting local schools and communities.

A huge thank you to every PUCSR student and every UCD Volunteers Overseas volunteer. Your enthusiasm, commitment and teamwork made this collaboration such a success. We’re already looking forward to building on it again in 2027.

An inspiring evening with Lek Chailert, the world-renowned conservationist and founder of Elephant Nature Park.

One of the highlights of our week at Elephant Nature Park was the opportunity to meet its founder, Lek Chailert

Widely recognised as one of the world’s leading voices in elephant welfare and ethical tourism, Lek shared the journey behind building Elephant Nature Park from the ground up. She spoke honestly about the challenges she faced, the values that shaped her mission, and how one person’s determination can create lasting change.

For our HKU students, this was far more than a talk about conservation. It was an opportunity to learn first-hand from someone whose vision, resilience and leadership have inspired people around the world. We were also incredibly grateful that Lek took the time to answer students’ questions so openly and thoughtfully.

Over the past three decades, Lek and Elephant Nature Park have rescued hundreds of elephants while helping reshape the conversation around elephant welfare in Thailand. Today, the sanctuary is recognised around the world as a leader in ethical elephant tourism, rescue and rehabilitation.

Her work has earned international recognition, including being named one of TIME Magazine’s Heroes of Asia, being honoured by Hillary Clinton as one of six Women Heroes of Global Conservation, and receiving France’s Legion of Honour from President Emmanuel Macron.

Thank you, Lek, for sharing your story and reminding us that one person with courage, conviction and perseverance really can change the world.

Experiential learning goes far beyond the classroom.

For our students from the University of Hong Kong, that meant spending five days at Elephant Nature Park, a world-renowned elephant sanctuary in northern Thailand.

Throughout the week, students explored elephant welfare, ethical tourism and conservation while contributing to the day-to-day running of the sanctuary.

They also explored why responsible sanctuaries place elephant welfare above entertainment through a welfare-first, hands-off approach that allows elephants to behave as naturally as possible.

There were muddy boots, early mornings, plenty of work and countless unforgettable moments. More importantly, there were opportunities to ask questions, challenge assumptions and learn directly from the people dedicating their lives to protecting these incredible animals.

This is experiential learning in action.

Over the coming days, we’ll share more from the programme, including the inspiring story behind Elephant Nature Park, meeting its founder, and taking part in the daily work that helps keep the sanctuary running.

MOEI Cambodia 2026 🇰🇭

Teaching is in full swing, with our volunteers now entering Week 4 of the programme.

Across four community schools in Siem Reap, 16 volunteers are delivering student-centred English classes as part of our MOEI Cambodia Volunteer Teaching Programme.

Volunteers are supporting local students through engaging English lessons while building meaningful connections within their school communities.

It has been fantastic to see volunteers grow in confidence over the past few weeks, embracing the challenges and rewards of teaching while making a positive impact in their classrooms.

HKU in Chiang Mai 2026 🇹🇭

Our Community, Conservation & Culture Service Learning Trip got underway with a fantastic day alongside students from Chiang Mai University (CMU).

Paired with CMU student buddies, our HKU students took part in icebreakers, team challenges, and a city-wide scavenger hunt, exploring some of Chiang Mai’s most important historical and cultural landmarks.

The day provided an opportunity to learn more about the city, build connections with local students, and gain new perspectives through collaboration and cultural exchange.

A fantastic start to the programme, with new friendships already formed and plenty more experiences still to come.

The first week of MOEI 2026 is complete - and we’re incredibly proud to now be in our third year working alongside UCDVO here in Siem Reap. 🇰🇭💙

Over the past week the volunteers have completed teacher training workshops, spent time learning more about Cambodian culture and traditions, visited local schools ahead of beginning their placements, met with Buddhist monks, and built a really strong team dynamic together.

All of this has been in preparation for the group beginning their teaching placements across local schools and education projects next week.

What always stands out with UCDVO groups is the attitude they bring - open minded, adaptable, respectful and fully committed to learning from the communities and people around them.

This group are continuing the incredibly high standards set by the volunteers before them and we’re really excited for the weeks ahead.

From flooding to a safe, usable learning space.

Each rainy season, the outdoor learning and play area at our partner school, NHCA, was left flooded and unusable - disrupting classes, limiting movement, and creating safety risks for students.

This flood-proof floor now provides a safe, durable outdoor space that can be used year-round for learning, play, and community activities.

This project was delivered in partnership between Experiential Learning Asia and Foundation for Shared Impact (FSI), with FSI’s generous donation funding the flood-proof concrete floor, and coordinated alongside an Australian donor who funded the roof structure, ensuring long-term protection from flooding.

The project was made possible by the leadership of Mr Prosh, NHCA’s school director, who brought this project together.

MOEI and the UN Sustainable Development Goals - Making a Difference in Cambodia

Through the MOEI volunteer program, our volunteers actively contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

📘 SDG 4 – Quality Education: Teaching English to children in local community schools.

⚖️ SDG 5 – Gender Equality: Ensuring inclusive learning opportunities for all children.

💼 SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: Collaborating with undergraduate trainee teachers to provide hands-on teaching experience.
