"Rethinking Colonial Legacies across Southeast Asia," an academic work authored by Diana S. Kim and published by Cambridge University Press in March 2025. The study examines the impact of the Japanese occupation during World War II on Southeast Asia's colonial legacies. It conceptualizes the occupation as a critical juncture that influenced the persistence and transformation of American and European colonial institutions in the region. By analyzing how the Japanese selectively retained, altered, or introduced new governance structures between 1940 and 1945, the work highlights the diverse processes through which pre-1940 colonial institutions were transmitted into the post-war and independent Southeast Asia.
