Partnering for Prevention:
Expanding Drowning Prevention in Cambodia

SWIM Cambodia is excited to announce that our local partner, Hile Teuk Kampuchea (HTK), is an official partner of UNICEF for the delivery of drowning prevention interventions in Cambodia with support from RNLI. For the last year, we have supported HTK in designing a programme in Run Ta Eik and Kampong Phluk communities in Siem Reap. Drowning Prevention interventions- training and teaching on Water Safety, Lifesaving Skills, and Survival Swimming Skills will be delivered in Run Ta Ek and Kampong Phluk communities in Siem Reap. These interventions will primarily target children and young people aged 6-17 years and adult caregivers. The programme will also work together with local education departments and schools to equip Schoolteachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to teach students water safety education for the prevention of drowning and drowning-related injury. This programme will be supported by RNLI is set to deliver survival swimming teacher training. We hope to announce the launch of this programme very soon.
In the video below, Chanarith talks about the deep pain of losing her precious child to drowning. Her story is heartbreaking, and sadly, she is not alone. Too many families in Cambodia have experienced the same devastating loss. In the video, you can also see highlights of the workshop delivered, facilitating participation with key stakeholders and scoping visits to open-water sites in Run Ta Eik, in Siem Reap.
The launch of Cambodiaβs first-ever National Strategic Plan on Drowning Prevention and Management this week marks a powerful milestone. Together, through our partnership, we are moving closer to making our shared vision a realityβwhere every child in Cambodia is safe from drowning.
