The African Billfish Foundation (ABF) is a unique charity which maintains and analyses the largest billfish tagging database in Africa. With tagging efforts dating back to 1986 and over 55 000 fish tagged to date, the ABF conducts research through its international research partners promoting a smart approach to the conservation, research and management of all billfish species and their environmen
t. With various links to international and regional fisheries management organisations, their governing bodies and other tagging programs, the ABF ensures that research guides actual management decisions to achieve its' desired conservation and sustainability objectives. The program also encourages fishing practices that support sustainable uses compatible with conservation, whilst still maintaining economic returns. Beyond managing conventional tagging and tag recovery programs throughout Africa and abroad, the ABF also runs an education program while facilitating data collection and other billfish research throughout the Indian and East Atlantic Oceans. Current additional studies include satellite (PSAT) tagging, genetics analyses of billfish stock structures as well as analyses of the socioeconomics and sustainability of African artisanal fisheries which capture billfish species. Through being a charity the ABFs efforts are completely reliant upon donations from our supporters and if you would like to contribute towards billfish conservation then contact us at "[email protected]" about payment options
