Today, the African Social Development Focus (ASDEF) was officially introduced by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to the County Steering Group (CSG) of Garissa County as a service provider partner for the implementation of the “Creating Shared Value for Young People in the Livestock Sector in Kenya (CASHA Programme).” Garissa is one of the four target counties for the programme, alongside Wajir County, Mandera County, and Tana River County. The session brought together key county departments, notably the Livestock Production Department, which will play a central role in partnership with ASDEF during project implementation, as well as departments of Trade and Cooperatives, Water, Environment, and Social Services. The meeting was also attended by state actors such as the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA), and development partners including Save the Children, World Food Programme , and UNICEF, alongside other local organizations. The introduction marks an important step toward coordinated implementation of the CASHA Programme, aimed at enhancing youth participation and value creation in the livestock sector.

With support from ForumCiv Eastern & Southern Africa under the SASA Program, ASDEF conducted a successful youth and women leadership and civic engagement training in Wajir. The activity strengthened participants’ leadership, communication, and advocacy skills—directly achieving the project objective of empowering community actors to effectively participate in governance and demand accountability.
The training was highly relevant to the Wajir context, where women and youth often face limited space in decision-making. By building their confidence, awareness of rights, and practical advocacy capacity, the workshop addressed local gaps in civic participation and strengthened grassroots voices.
This initiative aligns strongly with the SASA Program’s broader goal of enhancing social accountability by empowering citizens and CSOs to influence governance processes. Through the creation of peer-to-peer support networks and actionable leadership plans, the activity contributed to a more engaged, informed, and active civil society in Wajir.

ASDEF Strengthens Leadership and Governance Capacity Among Women and Youth in Wajir. Asdef Kenya, with support from ForumCiv Eastern & Southern Africa through the Strengthening Agencies for Social Accountability (SASA) Program, convened a one-day Leadership and Governance Training aimed at empowering women and youth to take an active role in political and decision-making processes within Wajir County.
The session brought together diverse participants including emerging youth leaders, women representatives, civil society actors, and local administrators. The training focused on building participants’ understanding of inclusive governance, leadership ethics, public participation, and the importance of accountability and transparency in public affairs.
Through interactive discussions and practical exercises, participants reflected on barriers limiting women and youth involvement in leadership, and explored strategies to strengthen their engagement in governance spaces. Facilitators emphasized the role of civic education, collective action, and rights-based advocacy in influencing responsive and equitable governance.
Speaking during the session, participants expressed renewed commitment to champion positive change within their communities. Many highlighted that the training enhanced their confidence to engage in county planning, budget discussions, and community forums—key steps towards a more participatory governance system in Wajir.
This initiative is part of ASDEF’s broader effort to promote inclusive, transparent, and accountable governance, ensuring that women and youth are not only heard but also meaningfully involved in shaping decisions that impact their lives.
