Kishamba Community Improvement Organisation (KCIO) is a community-based conservation organization dedicated to environmental protection, wildlife conservation, and the preservation of endangered species, including vital pollinators. Through its conservation initiatives, KCIO works closely with local communities to promote sustainable livelihoods while safeguarding biodiversity in Taita-Taveta County.
The county is home to several endemic species of stingless bees, which play a crucial role in pollination and ecosystem health. These species are categorized according to their nesting habitats, either in trees or underground. They include Liotrigona, Hypotrigona, Meliponula gribodoi, and Plebeina armata. Recognizing their ecological importance, KCIO engages farmers in tree-planting initiatives and supports the construction of modern meliponiculture hives specifically designed to accommodate these indigenous stingless bee species.
Meliponiculture, which refers to the sustainable rearing of stingless bees for the production of honey, propolis, and other bee products, has emerged as a viable alternative livelihood for local communities. Stingless bee honey is highly valued for its superior medicinal and nutritional qualities. As a result, it commands premium market prices, with a kilogram selling for between KSh 1,500 and KSh 2,000, compared to approximately KSh 1,000 for conventional honey.
Several community groups across Taita-Taveta County are actively involved in stingless beekeeping projects. These groups are located in Sagalla, and Mbololo in Voi Sub-County; Bura, Rong’e, and Chawia in Mwatate Sub-County; and Werugha in Wundanyi Sub-County. Through awareness campaigns and capacity-building programs, farmers are encouraged to domesticate stingless bees and plant indigenous tree species, thereby enhancing biodiversity, restoring habitats, and strengthening ecosystem resilience.
Beyond its economic and ecological benefits, stingless beekeeping presents a unique opportunity for tourism development through melitourism, which is a specialized form of entomotourism that utilizes bees and beekeeping activities as tourism attractions. Given the abundance and diversity of native stingless bee species in Taita-Taveta County, this natural resource offers significant potential for community-based tourism initiatives.
The development of melitourism could diversify the county’s nature-based tourism portfolio while creating additional income streams for local communities. Visitors could experience stingless bee conservation, traditional and modern beekeeping practices, honey harvesting demonstrations, biodiversity education, and cultural interactions with local communities. Such experiences strengthen the connection between conservation, sustainable livelihoods, and tourism development.
To fully realize this potential, research studies are needed to identify the essential requirements, opportunities, and challenges associated with melitourism development in the county. With strategic investment and stakeholder collaboration, melitourism could contribute significantly to biodiversity conservation, community empowerment, and the growth of both the tourism and beekeeping sectors in Taita-Taveta County.
