Across partner schools, learners continue to engage in creative writing and storytelling activities that help them build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and express their ideas in their own unique ways.

Through these sessions, reading becomes more than an activity. It becomes a pathway to imagination, creativity, and self-expression. Access to books is important, but so is creating opportunities for learners to interact with stories, share their own experiences, and develop the skills that help them thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Every book read has the potential to inspire a story told and a story written.

As this engagement concludes with officials from the Ministry of Education offices, we reflect on what this moment represents, not just for Elimu Fanaka, but for the learners, educators and communities at the centre of this work.

This was more than a walkthrough of partner schools. It was an opportunity to share progress, listen carefully, and strengthen the relationships that bridge policy and on-the-ground realities. Having the ministry's officials see the work firsthand inside classrooms, alongside educators within the communities Elimu Fanaka serve matters.

Elimu Fanka is grateful to our partner schools for opening their doors, to their leadership for the trust they extend, and to the Ministry officials who made the time to engage meaningfully with what is happening here in Taita Taveta.
This is not the end of a visit. It is the start of a new journey and a reminder that credibility is built through sustained work, trusted collaboration, and impact that speaks for itself over time.

Educate. Empower. Transform

Real impact is best understood when it is seen firsthand.

On Tuesday, we had the opportunity to visit three of our partner schools alongside officials from the Ministry of Education’s Policy and Partnerships offices, creating space to reflect on what sustained literacy work looks like within real learning environments.

Across these schools the visit was not just about showcasing activities. It was about sharing the journey of what has been built over the years through collaboration with educators, school leadership, communities, and learners strengthening literacy spaces, supporting foundational learning, and investing in systems that create long-term educational impact.

For Elimu Fanaka, this moment matters. It reflects growing recognition of the work being done on the ground and reinforces the importance of partnerships that connect policy, community realities, and practical education solutions.

As we walked through classrooms and engaged with school communities, one thing remained clear: meaningful change happens when learning is strengthened where it matters most.

We are grateful for the opportunity to host this engagement and continue building toward stronger literacy outcomes for learners across Taita Taveta.

Day one of hosting officials from the Ministry of Education in Taita Taveta County.

Yesterday’s visit to the Voi Sub-County educstion offices created an important space for conversation, reflection, and connection around the work being done to strengthen foundational literacy within our communities.

For Elimu Fanaka, moments like these go beyond meetings and formal visits. They are an opportunity to share the realities within our learning environments, the progress being made alongside educators and schools, and the importance of partnerships in creating long-term impact for learners.

Elimu Fanaka continues to building relationships grounded in community engagement, literacy development, and collaboration and this visit is a meaningful reflection of that growing trust and shared commitment.

We look forward to the continued conversations and engagements throughout the visit.

Recent conversations around foundational literacy in Kenya continue to highlight the importance of strengthening reading culture, improving access to learning materials, and creating supportive learning environments for learners especially in underserved communities.

In Taita Taveta, this reality is reflected in the growing need for spaces where learners can engage with books beyond the classroom and develop confidence through reading.

That is the heart behind . More than a collection of books, it is a growing learning space where learners are encouraged to read, explore stories, ask questions, and build lifelong learning habits. It is also a space that supports educators working to nurture literacy and curiosity within their classrooms and communities.

Every learner who discovers a new story, every educator encouraging reading, and every book placed into a learner’s hands contributes to building a stronger culture of literacy within our communities.

At Elimu Fanaka, foundational literacy begins with access, encouragement, and environments where learners are given the opportunity to grow, imagine, and thrive.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, we are reminded that education and wellbeing go hand in hand. Through our teacher training programs, we continue to support educators in creating safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments where learners can learn, grow, and thrive.

Strong literacy outcomes are built not only through quality education, but also through emotional support, encouragement, and positive classroom experiences. As we work alongside educators and schools, we recognize the important role educators play in shaping both learning and student wellbeing.

At Elimu Fanaka, we remain committed to strengthening & advocating for foundational literacy, teacher development, student wellbeing, and community-centered education across our partner schools.

Did you know?

In many classrooms, learning to read doesn’t happen all at once, it happens in small moments.

Two learners sitting side by side. Taking turns. Sounding out words. Building confidence together. But when a child reaches age 10 without strong reading skills, learning becomes significantly harder across all subjects.

That’s why at Elimu Fanaka, our focus is on and early grade learning (Grades 1–3) where reading skills are built and learning outcomes are shaped for the long term. Because when learners read with confidence, they don’t just participate, they begin to understand.

The earlier we act, the stronger the foundation.

When learners have access to books, something shifts. They don’t just read, they begin to imagine, ask questions, and approach learning differently. This is what we are building through the Campaign spaces where reading feels natural, exciting, and within reach for every learner. That is the kind of change Elimu Fanaka is working towards.
