This Mental Health Awareness Month, we are reminded that education and wellbeing go hand in hand. Through our teacher training programs, we continue to support educators in creating safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environments where learners can learn, grow, and thrive.

Strong literacy outcomes are built not only through quality education, but also through emotional support, encouragement, and positive classroom experiences. As we work alongside educators and schools, we recognize the important role educators play in shaping both learning and student wellbeing.

At Elimu Fanaka, we remain committed to strengthening & advocating for foundational literacy, teacher development, student wellbeing, and community-centered education across our partner schools.

Did you know?

In many classrooms, learning to read doesn’t happen all at once, it happens in small moments.

Two learners sitting side by side. Taking turns. Sounding out words. Building confidence together. But when a child reaches age 10 without strong reading skills, learning becomes significantly harder across all subjects.

That’s why at Elimu Fanaka, our focus is on and early grade learning (Grades 1–3) where reading skills are built and learning outcomes are shaped for the long term. Because when learners read with confidence, they don’t just participate, they begin to understand.

The earlier we act, the stronger the foundation.

When learners have access to books, something shifts. They don’t just read, they begin to imagine, ask questions, and approach learning differently. This is what we are building through the Campaign spaces where reading feels natural, exciting, and within reach for every learner. That is the kind of change Elimu Fanaka is working towards.

A child should never arrive at a library and find empty shelves.

Through , we are raising 15,000 books for 10 partner schools because every book placed on a shelf is a door opened.

Final day of our Grade 1–3 teacher training.

Over the past 3 days, we’ve worked alongside grade 1-3 educators from our partner schools to strengthen practical, classroom-based strategies for early reading and foundational literacy.

From phonics and reading comprehension to learner engagement, the focus has been on approaches that can be applied directly in the classroom to improve learning outcomes in early grade education.

Because foundational literacy doesn’t start with materials alone, it starts with empowered educators equipped with the right tools and support.

As we close this training, the focus now shifts to the classroom where these strategies come to life and shape how learners engage with reading every day. This is where the real impact begins.

Day 1 of our Grade 1–3 teacher training set a strong foundation for the work ahead.

We engaged educators from our partner schools on practical, classroom-based strategies to strengthen early reading and foundational literacy skills.

This stage of learning is critical—it is where reading skills are built and long-term learning outcomes are shaped. Strengthening teacher capacity at this level is key to improving literacy outcomes across the system.

At Elimu Fanaka, our focus on early grade literacy (Grades 1–3) is grounded in the understanding that sustainable impact begins with strong foundations in reading.

Looking forward to building on this momentum in the upcoming sessions.

There's something powerful about a classroom full of learners who are ready to learn but still waiting for the tools that make it possible.

At Elimu Fanaka, we believe every learner deserves the tools that make learning possible starting with books in their hands and stories that speak to them. This is the work. And every book counts.
