Kenya Red Cross Society Taita Taveta County team was in Kwale for a donor visit together with the British Red Cross (BRC) to showcase impactful initiatives being implemented under the Integrated Food Security and Livelihoods (IFSL) Programme.

The delegation was hosted by the Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross Society, Dr. Ahmed Idris, together with the CEO of WWF-Kenya, Jackson Kiplagat. The two organisations are jointly implementing the projects in Kwale and Lamu counties. The CEO of the British Red Cross, Béatrice Butsana-Sita, and the CEO of WWF-UK, Tanya Steele, also visited the nature-based solutions projects in Kwale County to witness the impact of the ongoing humanitarian and conservation partnership between the organisations.

Among the innovations showcased was the Food Chain & Nutrition Programme focusing on poultry farming through the use of Black Soldier Fly and Azolla as sustainable nutritional products for poultry feeding, while also producing organic manure for soil fertilization and improved agricultural productivity.

The team also had an opportunity to present the AI Innovation Challenge solutions, where the three winning innovations that received pre-seed funding of KES 350,000 demonstrated remarkable progress from simple ideas into fully developing community-centered solutions. The innovations focused on:
• Agriculture Optimization
• Disaster Preparedness & Management
• Water Solutions

It was inspiring to witness young innovators transforming ideas into practical solutions that continue to create impact within communities.

Kenya Red Cross Society in partnership with Premchandbai, Teita Estate and business community, carried out a vital relief food distribution exercise in Zungulukani Village, Kasigau Ward, within Voi Sub-County and Kishushe, Wundanyi Sub County.

This initiative comes in response to the ongoing drought that has affected many parts of the county, leaving vulnerable families in urgent need of support. 200 households in Zungulukani and 580 households in Kishushe benefited from the distribution, including Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and elderly members of the community - ensuring that no one is left behind.

The activity was graced by key leaders, including the KRCS Governor 2, as well as the Deputy Governor of Taita Taveta County, who expressed deep appreciation to the Red Cross and all partners and donors whose generosity made this possible.

Beyond the food distribution, the exercise was a symbol of hope, unity, and humanity. The targeted communities expressed heartfelt gratitude, their smiles reflecting renewed strength and reassurance that they are not alone during these challenging times.

Joint monitoring with IFSL Taita Taveta Team and British Red Cross.

Monitoring visit was conducted on 26th with the British Red Cross to assess progress of the 2025 interventions. The mission highlighted strong advancements across all the components including Food system and livelihood s, WASH, and youth. Supported value chains including goat and rabbit production are contributing to improved household incomes, while the newly constructed sunflower processing plant is expected to benefit approximately 2,000 farmers by enhancing local value addition and reducing reliance on cross-border services.
Significant progress was also noted under the WASH component, with the successful completion of sanitation facilities in 5 schools, improving access to safe and dignified learning environments including disability schools.

Additionally, the vocational training targeting mother-to-mother groups, disability inclusion groups, and KRCS Youth and volunteers has progressed well with beneficiaries set to transition into entrepreneurship and sustainable livelihoods after their final exams in April.

Notably, youth-led green enterprises under the circular economy pillar are gaining traction, particularly in waste management and recycling initiatives, demonstrating the programme’s contribution to both economic empowerment and environmental sustainability.

KRCS appreciates the support from British Red Cross in promoting resilience for the community members in Taveta Sub County.
