Bureni Turtle Watch (Kenya) A community-based Marine Conservation Group Bureni is a small village in Vipingo on the coast of Kenya, 40 minutes north of Mombasa.

Around 12 years ago, a few concerned local people became aware of the high mortality rate of the resident Sea Turtles due to the rampant poaching by the local fishermen. The people knew the Sea Turtle was a bio-indicator which suggested the reef was home to a healthy ecosystem. They appreciated the importance of a healthy reef and knew it would not remain this way if the fisherman continued to sla

ughter the Sea Turtles, thus Bureni Turtle Watch was born. To date we have protected over 500 nests and seen well over 10,000 baby turtles make their way to the ocean.
