World Environmental Day celebrations!

SACDEP Kenya today participated in a tree-planting exercise in Loitoktok, Kajiado County, in celebration of World Environmental Day 2026.

The exercise was presided over by Hon. Juddy Nayeyo Pere, CECM for Water, Environment, Natural Resources & Climate Change, Kajiado County. This event was held to sensitize and mobilize communities to take collective action towards a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.

🌲 Why Every Farm Needs Trees

A farm without trees is a farm without insurance. Trees provide shade, fodder, timber, fruit, and fuel. They stabilise soil, moderate temperature, attract rainfall, and through their fallen leaves, continuously build organic matter in the soil.

1. Microclimate regulation: Trees create a cooler, moister microclimate beneath and around them. This reduces heat stress on crops, cuts evaporation from the soil, and extends the period of productive conditions during dry spells.

2. Soil improvement: Tree roots go deep, accessing subsoil nutrients and water. As leaves fall and roots die, organic matter is continuously added to the soil, a passive, year-round process of composting. Nitrogen-fixing trees add nitrogen at levels that can significantly reduce the need for external fertiliser.

3. Water regulation: Tree roots increase soil infiltration rates, reducing runoff. Trees on watershed slopes regulate the flow of water into streams, reducing flood risk in wet seasons and maintaining stream flows in dry periods.

4. Carbon and carbon credits: Trees store carbon in their biomass and in the soil through their root systems. For communities in the conservancy corridor engaged with REDD+ carbon programmes, protecting and planting trees is directly linked to income from carbon markets.

Did you know that well-aged animal manure can be used to make a simple liquid fertiliser?.

Fill a 20-litre bucket one-third full with well-aged animal manure (cattle, goat, or poultry dung). Top up with water. Stir thoroughly. Cover with a cloth or a loose lid (not an airtight one, as the fermentation produces gas that needs to escape). Leave to steep for 5–7 days, stirring once or twice daily. After a week, strain out the solid material through an old cloth or wire mesh. The liquid is ready to use.

Practical tips:
1. Manure tea must be diluted before use. Apply it at a ratio of 1 part tea to 4–5 parts water. The final solution should be the colour of weak tea.

2. Water directly into the root zone, or apply as a foliar spray in the early morning or late afternoon (avoid midday when the sun can scorch wet leaves). Apply every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.

3. The remaining solids after straining are not wasted. They are partially decomposed and make excellent material to add to a compost heap or apply as a slow-release mulch.

4. Always use aged or composted manure, not fresh. Fresh manure contains pathogens and excess ammonia that can harm plants and introduce food safety risks to vegetables.

On this day in 1963, Kenya took charge of its own destiny, and for over three decades, SACDEP Kenya has walked alongside rural communities across Kenya, training smallholder farmers in Ecological farming, sustainable land use, and agribusiness skills because we believe freedom is knowing that your soil is healthy, your harvest is yours, and your family is fed.

This Madaraka Day, we celebrate every woman who has turned degraded land into a thriving kitchen garden, every youth who has chosen the farm as a place of innovation, and every community that has said: we have what it takes.

The future belongs to those who cultivate it. 🌱
